Physiotherapist Advanced - Paediatric Respiratory Outpatients

Overview Location: Christchurch Hospital. Role: Part-time, 0.6 FTE (48 hours per fortnight), permanent, designated position. Salary starting at $111,240. This paediatric respiratory outpatient service supports tamariki and whānau to manage chronic and acute respiratory conditions in outpatient and telehealth settings. About the Role We are looking for a skilled and compassionate Physiotherapist to implement and deliver a Paediatric Respiratory Outpatient Service, primarily based at Christchurch Hospital. This Canterbury/Waitaha regional role provides specialist assessment, treatment, and education for children and young people with respiratory conditions, including cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, protracted bacterial bronchitis, neuromuscular and neurological conditions, and breathing pattern disorders. Working closely with the paediatric multidisciplinary team, you will deliver outpatient care that supports long‑term respiratory health, empowers whānau, and helps tamariki maintain activity, participation, and wellbeing. Outpatient services currently operate Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:30. Applicants will need to be available Thursdays to support a weekly multidisciplinary clinic. Key Responsibilities Provide physiotherapy assessment and intervention for tamariki with chronic and acute respiratory conditions, primarily in an outpatient setting. Deliver education on airway clearance techniques, breathing retraining, and exercise programmes. Support families and caregivers to understand treatment, equipment use, and home-based management. Complete individualised Respiratory Physiotherapy escalation plans for home and community use. Work collaboratively with the in-patient paeds physiotherapy team, paediatricians, nurses, dietitians, and other MDT members. Provide phone telehealth and, where appropriate, outreach follow-up care, including communicating plans with other health providers, schools and services. Contribute to care plans, annual reviews, and long-term respiratory management pathways. Develop the Paediatric Outpatient Physiotherapy Service, including referral criteria, waitlist triage, KPI monitoring, trials of new devices, and integration of evidence-based clinical care. Establish processes and procedures for regular clinical practice and supervise/mentor rotational physiotherapists and final-year students. Participate in peer review and supervision. New Zealand Registered physiotherapist with current APC. Demonstrated understanding of the significance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how to apply its principles in your role. Strong communication skills and the ability to engage confidently with children and whānau. Clinical experience in respiratory or paediatric physiotherapy (highly desirable). Compassion, cultural responsiveness, and a family-centred approach. Good clinical reasoning and the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
