Wildfire Specialist - Fixed Term - Wellington or Christchurch

About the role We're looking for a Wildfire Specialist to provide expert advice, leadership and support across wildfire prediction, prevention and management. This is a unique opportunity to apply your specialist expertise in a nationally significant role. This is a fixed‑term role starting ASAP through to 24December2026. What you will do Bring proven experience providing expert advice on wildfire or vegetation fire management Demonstrate strong project leadership skills, delivering complex or technical work programmes Have experience working with stakeholders across government, emergency services, or the forestry/rural sector Be able to translate technical information into clear, practical guidance Hold relevant qualifications, certifications, or operational experience in wildfire, forestry, or fire management What you'll bring to the role You will play a key part in strengthening Fire and Emergency New Zealand's wildfire capability by supporting a wide range of prevention, preparedness, response and continuous improvement activities. Provide specialist wildfire advice and support to districts, regions, and national work programmes. Contribute to the review and update of Fire Plans and other wildfire management arrangements. Work with partner agencies, contractors, and stakeholders to strengthen operational preparedness and response capability. Contribute to the review, development, and maintenance of wildfire training, guidance material, and learning programmes to ensure they remain current and meet operational needs. Assist with the development and implementation of projects, policies, standards and tools that support national wildfire capability.
