We have an opportunity for an experienced and practical Trades Assistant to join our Engineering team at our Nelson Plant. Working closely with our Shift Engineers and Engineering Manager, you'll play a key role in supporting plant operations through preventative maintenance, equipment servicing, plant checks, lubrication programmes, and general engineering support. This is a hands‑on position that requires initiative, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently, particularly during weekend shifts. This is a full-time seasonal position. Responsibilities include: Supporting the maintenance team with plant and equipment repairs. Completing preventative maintenance and site lubrication programmes. Monitoring and maintaining essential plant services, including hot water, refrigeration, compressed air, hydraulic and water systems. Conducting daily, weekly and monthly plant inspections, readings and compliance checks. Reporting equipment faults and assisting with timely repairs. Supporting contractors and ensuring site services remain operational. Assisting with fabrication, fitting and welding tasks as required. Maintaining accurate maintenance records and completing work orders. Contributing to a safe working environment and following all health and safety procedures. This is predominantly a day shift role with a roster that includes every second weekend, providing regular time off while supporting critical plant operations. Flexible roster arrangements may be available. You're a mechanically minded individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and takes pride in keeping equipment operating at its best. To be successful in this role, you'll ideally bring: Experience in maintenance, engineering support, fitting, fabrication or a similar hands‑on trade environment. Strong mechanical aptitude and fault‑finding skills. Workshop skills, including welding and fabrication experience. The ability to work independently and manage your workload effectively. A proactive approach to problem‑solving and continuous improvement. Intermediate computer skills and the ability to maintain records. Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach. A strong commitment to health, safety and wellbeing. Experience working within a manufacturing or food processing environment. The following would be advantageous: Forklift licence and OSH endorsement. Trade qualification (Level 4 Engineering, Fitting, Mechanical or similar). Experience with refrigeration systems, boilers, compressed air systems or plant utilities. Full Class 1 driver's licence. Ngā painga - what’s in it for you?
