Full-time, Permanent About the Opportunity We’re looking for a motivated Large Animal Veterinarian to join our Ashburton team, with a particular interest in deer and production animal medicine. This role offers the chance to work across a diverse and rewarding caseload including sheep, beef, and deer, with a strong emphasis on deer health and performance. You’ll also have the unique opportunity to work closely alongside one of Canterbury’s most experienced senior deer veterinarians, gaining valuable insight, mentorship, and exposure to a wide range of interesting and challenging deer cases. The clinic has a strong dairy team and client base so you will support them in implementing a proactive approach to dairy herd health also. You’ll be part of a supportive rural practice that plays a key role in the success of local farming businesses, delivering practical, high-quality veterinary care that makes a real impact on farm productivity and animal wellbeing. What Your Day Could Look Like No two days are the same. You might be: Working through herd health and preventative programmes across sheep, beef and deer farms Managing fertility, reproduction, and production outcomes Scanning beef and deer herds. Supporting farmers with on-farm decision making and animal health planning Performing surgical and clinical procedures in both field and clinic settings Contributing to disease investigation and diagnostics Building strong, trusted relationships with local farmers Participating in an after-hours roster for urgent cases What We’re Looking For A Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or equivalent) and eligibility to work in New Zealand At least 2 years’ experience in large animal practice (or strong rural mixed practice background) Strong deer stock handling experience is preferred, but not a requirement A genuine interest in deer medicine, or a desire to develop expertise in this area Experience scanning beef and deer Confidence in herd health, reproductive work, diagnostics, and field surgery Strong communication skills with the ability to build trusted farmer relationships A team-focused mindset with a willingness to learn and share knowledge A full, clean Class 1 driver’s license About Farmfirst Veterinary Farmfirst Veterinary is a proudly Kiwi-owned network of rural clinics committed to supporting farming communities through practical, progressive veterinary care.
