Expression of Interest - System Engineers Government Communications Security Bureau NZ – Wellington Central, North Island Join our diverse and talented people and work at the heart of national security, providing essential intelligence to the NZ Government to protect New Zealand and its people. We are looking for System Engineers to power the infrastructure that keeps the GCSB and NZSIS running securely and efficiently.From Level 1 engineers who assist in developing, delivering and maintaining hardware, compute/storage, software‑integration and network services, to Level2 engineers deepening that expertise, and Level3 engineers leading complex platform initiatives and mentoring junior staff, you will play a critical role in the operational support of Windows and Linux environments—handling incidents, problems, change work, preventative maintenance and full lifecycle management. What you will do: Develop, deliver and maintain a wide‑range of business‑technology solutions – from the underlying IT hardware and compute/storage platforms to software integration, systems‑management tools and network‑engineering services. Own day‑to‑day operational support of our Windows and Linux environments, handling incidents, troubleshooting problems, managing changes, performing preventative maintenance and guiding each system through its full lifecycle. Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into reliable, secure technical solutions that meet the strict requirements of the intelligence community. Help grow the team by sharing knowledge and mentoring junior staff, contributing to a supportive, high‑performing engineering culture. Ko wai koe – about you You’re an early‑career, mid‑level or senior System Engineer who loves working with others to solve tough infrastructure problems while continuously refining your skills. You thrive in fast‑moving team environment and see every challenge as a chance to grow. What we’re looking for Experience in computing, IT, electrical or telecommunications (minimum 5years for senior levels). Infrastructure expertise: virtualisation, Microsoft Windows, Linux, replication/backup, SAN/storage, system monitoring, equipment installation, cooling and power resilience. Systems know‑how: Active Directory, certificate management, desktop‑virtualisation, mail/web servers, database administration, collaboration tools and automation. Self‑motivated, excellent planner, strong organiser, agile, detail‑oriented and customer‑focused. Confident communicator—both written and verbal—and comfortable working solo or within a team. Desirable: Ansible configuration‑management and ITIL service‑management knowledge. Ability to participate on the on‑call or rotating after‑hours roster.
