About the team The Analytics, Insights, and Modelling (AIM) team is the Treasury’s centre of excellence for quantitative economic analysis and modelling. AIM brings together specialist capability in macroeconomic, fiscal, and quantitative micro modelling to support high‑quality, policy‑relevant advice across the Treasury. Within AIM, macroeconomic modelling plays a central role in informing advice on fiscal sustainability, taxation, productivity, and long‑term economic performance. The team works closely with policy colleagues, forecasters, and external experts to ensure analytical work is both technically robust and directly relevant to New Zealand’s most important economic challenges. AIM values intellectual rigour, collaboration, and curiosity. We are seeking Macroeconomic Modelling Specialists at both Analyst and Senior Analyst levels to provide advanced analytical expertise and intellectual leadership in macroeconomic modelling. This is a hands‑on, technically focused role, ideal for economists with deep modelling expertise who enjoy tackling complex, policy‑relevant questions. You will design, build, and maintain sophisticated macroeconomic models and associated code, using these tools to inform Treasury’s advice on fiscal and economic policy. Depending on your interests and experience, your responsibilities may include: Developing and enhancing structural or semi‑structural macroeconomic models, such as overlapping generations or DSGE‑style models. Conducting forward‑looking macroeconomic and fiscal analysis, including forecasting and simulation work. Producing high‑quality research outputs, including briefings, analytical notes, and working papers that meet journal‑quality standards. Translating complex modelling results into clear, actionable insights for policy colleagues and senior decision‑makers. Contributing to the Treasury’s long‑term stewardship of macroeconomic modelling capabilities. As a Senior Analyst, you will also provide intellectual leadership in macroeconomic modelling, mentor colleagues, and help shape the development of modelling priorities that align with the Treasury’s strategic direction. Within this framework, you will exercise discretion over analytical methods and contribute to stewardship discussions on future capability needs. These are permanent, full‑time positions (40 hours per week) based in Wellington, New Zealand. You are a technically strong macroeconomist who is motivated by intellectually challenging, policy‑relevant work. To be successful in this role, you will bring: A PhD or Master’s degree in Economics Proven experience in macroeconomic modelling, including time series analysis, econometrics, or structural macroeconomic frameworks. Programming expertise, preferably in Matlab, with familiarity in R or similar programming languages being desirable. Strong skills in simulation, optimisation, calculus, and linear algebra. The ability to clearly communicate complex technical material to non‑modellers and policy audiences. You will ideally have experience in a modelling‑intensive role, gained in academia, a central bank, treasury, finance ministry, or economic consultancy. Experience working in a policy institution and a demonstrated ability to produce research‑quality outputs are highly advantageous. In addition, you will: Be adaptable and comfortable working in a fast‑paced policy environment. For Senior Analyst roles, you will also need: At least 4.5 to 6 years of experience in a modelling‑intensive role. Demonstrated experience sharing your expertise and mentoring others. The base salary ranges for these roles are as follows: Analyst – Modelling Specialist : $90,693.30 to $122,702.70 Macroeconomic Modelling Specialist (Senior Analyst) : $126,975.55 to $171,790.45 Appointments will be made based on the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and alignment with the requirements of the role.
