Learning Assistant Position – ESOL / Counselling Specialist - Primary School We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Learning Assistant with specialist skills in either ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) or Counselling, and appropriate qualifications and experience, to work with our Teaching Team in supporting the needs of our diverse learners. Person Specification Specialist skills, qualifications and experience in either ESOL or Counselling Strong communication and interpersonal skills Experience working with children preferred A passion for supporting students with individual needs Has a positive growth mindset and models inclusivity Knowledge of how best to differentiate and scaffold learning for children in years 1-6 with a diverse range of needs Effective de-escalation strategies Takes initiative and demonstrates sound judgement - solving problems on the go throughout the school day Easily develops trusted relationships and ensures high levels of confidentiality Needs the ability to be calm under pressure, to be patient and adaptable Able to maintain digital records on our eTap Student Management system and work with Google Suite Is a team player, has a sense of fun and contributes positively to the school culture Models school values by Showing respect, Aspiring to be an Involved Lifelong Learner And most importantly of all adores children, will go out of their way to ensure childrens' needs come first and is committed to every child achieving the best educational outcomes Qualifications and Experience Relevant qualification and/or experience in ESOL or Counselling Understanding of the New Zealand education system Qualifications and experience relevant to the position (please list these) First Aid Certificate (current or able to obtain this prior to starting, in own time) Responsible to: The Principal This is a fixed term position for the remainder of 2026, with the possibility of becoming permanent in 2027. Hours of Work for 2026: 27.5 hours per week Start date by negotiation 40 weeks per year (term time only) Monday to Friday 9am - 3pm Half an hour each day for lunch (unpaid) Conditions of Employment and Remuneration: In accordance with Support Staff in Schools' Collective Agreement (see Part 3A) - with pay scale negotiated to reflect experience Identification and police checks are a requirement of all school positions.
