Job Description
Magnetic Recruitment – Wanganui, North Island We are working with a well-established organisation operating a significant waste management and environmental infrastructure facility in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. They are looking for a Landfill Technician to join their team in a permanent, full-time position. This is a highly practical role suited to someone with a mechanical, electrical, utilities, water/wastewater or trade background who enjoys working outdoors, getting hands‑on with equipment and infrastructure, and solving problems in the field. You will spend approximately 80% of your time out in the field, working across landfill gas, leachate, stormwater and associated environmental systems. Your responsibilities will include: Monitoring landfill gas systems and taking gas measurements Monitoring stormwater and other environmental systems Inspecting wells, well heads, pipework, pumps, valves and associated infrastructure Carrying out practical repairs, maintenance and system adjustments Supporting pipework installation and alterations, including electrofusion welding Identifying faults, maintenance requirements and emerging issues Supporting the operation and maintenance of leachate systems Completing environmental inspections and sampling Recording measurements and maintenance activities accurately Reporting issues and abnormal readings to the Environmental Engineer Ordering parts, fittings and consumables as required Your responsibilities will include: Monitoring landfill gas systems and taking gas measurements Monitoring stormwater and other environmental systems Inspecting wells, well heads, pipework, pumps, valves and associated infrastructure Carrying out practical repairs, maintenance and system adjustments Supporting pipework installation and alterations, including electrofusion welding Identifying faults, maintenance requirements and emerging issues Supporting the operation and maintenance of leachate systems Completing environmental inspections and sampling Recording measurements and maintenance activities accurately Reporting issues and abnormal readings to the Environmental Engineer Ordering parts, fittings and consumables as required We are looking for someone who: Has experience in a practical mechanical, electrical, utilities, civil or environmental field-based role Has strong hands‑on mechanical aptitude and practical problem‑solving skills Is physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in a physically active role Enjoys working with equipment, infrastructure and tools Has experience with, or is willing to learn about, pumps, valves and pipework Has practical experience with pipework connections, repairs or installation Has experience with electrofusion welding or similar techniques, or is willing to learn Is reliable, safety‑focused and comfortable working as part of a small team Holds a full Class 1 driver's licence Is based in, or able to easily commute to, the Manawatū-Whanganui region Previous landfill experience is beneficial butnot essential. We are particularly interested in practical people from water treatment, wastewater, utilities, mechanical or electrical trades. This is a salaried position with an 8-hour working day, generally starting between 8.00am and 9.00am. You will participate in an on-call roster approximately every third week, with a allowance when rostered. This may involve attending site outside normal working hours following significant environmental events, such as heavy rainfall requiring additional monitoring or sampling. What is on offer?
