Meal Plant Operator - Longliner Fishing Vessel We're currently seeking an experienced Meal Plant Operator (Independent Contractor) to join the San Aotea II , one of our specialist longline vessels. The vessel spends most of the year targeting ling in the Sub-Antarctic, Chatham Rise, and off the Southland coast. From December through February, the San Aotea II heads to the Ross Sea as part of New Zealand's world-leading, sustainably managed toothfish fishery. As the Meal Plant Operator, you'll work closely with the Skipper and Engineering team, taking ownership of the vessel's Fish Meal Plant operations. You'll be responsible for safely operating, monitoring, and maintaining the fish meal plant while ensuring production runs efficiently and accurately. You'll also complete daily production records, identify maintenance requirements, and help maximise value from the vessel's catch. This is a hands-on role requiring sound mechanical aptitude, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a remote offshore environment. This is an Independent Contractor (self-employed) role operating on a trip-on (6-7 weeks), trip-off (6-7 weeks) contract, offering a balanced rotation for work-life stability. The vessel is due to depart around the end of September 2026 (subject to change). Depending on operational requirements, some voyages may be longer, including the Ross Sea season. Please note you may not be required for the Antarctic (ice) trip, depending on swing and crewing requirements. Working at sea comes with its challenges. You'll live and work alongside the same crew for extended periods, with the vessel operating 24/7 throughout each voyage. About you To be successful in this role, you'll bring: Proven experience operating, monitoring, and maintaining a Fish Meal Plant or similar industrial processing equipment. Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot equipment where required. Excellent attention to detail with accurate production and maintenance record keeping. A practical, positive attitude and the ability to work well within a close-knit crew. A proactive commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards. Physical and mental resilience suited to extended periods working offshore. Previous experience working at sea is highly regarded but not essential.
