Community Mobiliser - Early Years

Help create safer futures for tamariki and whānau Tautoko Mai is looking for an experienced relationship builder to join our prevention team as a Community Mobiliser. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing movement focused on preventing family violence and sexual violence before it occurs. Working across the Bay of Plenty, you'll support communities, strengthen local networks, and help create the conditions that allow pēpi, tamariki and whānau to thrive. This role sits within the Hikitia! For Our Futures initiative and has a particular focus on the early years sector. We're looking for someone who already understands the landscape surrounding whānau and young children and can bring people together around a shared purpose. About the role This is not a crisis response or counselling position. Instead, you'll work alongside communities, agencies, early years providers, iwi, hapū, and local leaders to strengthen protective factors, increase safeguarding capability, and support collective action across the region. You'll spend your time building relationships, facilitating conversations, supporting community-led initiatives, and helping people move from ideas to action. Working closely with our Primary Prevention Practitioner and national prevention network, you'll help identify opportunities for change and support initiatives that address the underlying drivers of family violence and sexual violence. What you'll be doing Building and maintaining strong relationships across the early years and community sectors. Working alongside whānau, communities, and organisations to identify opportunities to strengthen wellbeing and safety. Supporting safeguarding conversations and capability building across the sector. Facilitating workshops, hui, presentations, and community discussions. Bringing people together to collaborate on initiatives that strengthen outcomes for tamariki and whānau. Gathering community insights and identifying opportunities for systems-level change. Supporting local leadership and helping communities take action on issues that matter to them. Working with regional and national partners to share learning, ideas, and best practice. About you You are someone who enjoys connecting people, building trust, and creating momentum. You may come from community development, education, health, public health, early childhood, social services, or another related field. Most importantly, you'll be confident working with a wide range of people and comfortable facilitating conversations that lead to meaningful action. You’ll bring: Passion for working and learning in an emerging field focused on preventing family violence and sexual violence before it occurs. A tertiary qualification in education, public health, health promotion, gender studies, social or political science, community development, or another relevant area would be desirable. Strong understanding and/or experience in one or more of the following: Te Ao Māori, ideally with at least intermediate Te Reo Māori. Early years systems and settings connected to pēpi, tamariki and whānau. Body safety, child sexual abuse prevention, family violence and sexual violence prevention. Family violence and sexual violence, including prevalence, underlying drivers, emerging trends and best practice relating to primary prevention. Key concepts underpinning primary prevention, including the socioecological model, protective and risk factors, whole-of-population approaches, and systems change thinking and application. Early years settings and the systems around babies through to 5 years, which would be highly beneficial. Excellent organising, relationship-building and persuasive communication skills, with the ability to influence and bring others into the Community-led Prevention Partner Initiative. Ability to build trust quickly, motivate change, connect people around shared purpose, and mobilise collective activity. Strong facilitation skills, with experience designing participatory capability-building activities for diverse groups and communities, preferably on topics relevant to the prevention of family violence and sexual violence. Experience in community development, early years settings, or working across agencies and networks would be an advantage. Confidence with public speaking, presenting and facilitating. High-quality written communication skills, with the ability to adapt your writing depending on the audience and medium, including high-level reporting. Confidence using Microsoft Office, Outlook and other practical tools to support engagement and delivery. Experience with Canva, Eventbrite, photography/documenting, and CRM or similar databases would be an advantage. Experience in community mobilisation, systems change, prevention, safeguarding, child wellbeing, or family and sexual violence prevention would be highly advantageous.
