Electrical Design Engineer

MHM Automation is a leading designer and manufacturer of world-class food processing and packaging systems. Based in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, we work with customers throughout New Zealand and internationally to deliver innovative engineering solutions. We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join our Electrical Engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, designing electrical systems for custom-built machinery, and supporting ongoing innovation and product development initiatives. About the Role Reporting to the Automation & Electrical Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for the design and development of electrical systems across multiple projects. Working closely with mechanical, automation, projects, operations, sales, customers, and contractors, you will ensure electrical designs meet customer requirements, industry standards, and project timelines. Designing electrical systems for industrial machinery and automation projects. Developing and maintaining electrical schematics and documentation using AutoCAD Electrical / Eplan. Designing MCCs, control panels, and machine electrical systems. Ensuring compliance with New Zealand and Australian electrical standards and regulations. Contributing to product development, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives. Supporting project delivery through technical expertise and practical engineering solutions. Collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to achieve successful project outcomes. About You We welcome applications from individuals with an electrical background who are looking to broaden their experience in electrical design and engineering. A relevant trade or tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline would be beneficial, but we are also interested in candidates with strong practical industry experience. To be successful in this role, you will bring: Proven experience in electrical design within an industrial, manufacturing, or process environment. Strong proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or Eplan. A sound understanding of industrial automation hardware and control systems. Experience designing MCCs, control panels, and machine electrical systems. Knowledge of machine safety standards, risk reduction methodologies, and safety circuit design. Excellent planning, organisational, and problem-solving abilities. Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships. A proactive, solution-focused approach with high attention to detail.
