Wellington-based | Fixed term or secondment | late September 2026 to early October 2027 Senior Legal and Constitutional Advisor As Senior Legal and Constitutional Advisor, you will provide high-quality advice to the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, Ministers and government agencies on legal, policy and constitutional matters affecting executive government, particularly matters covered by the Cabinet Manual. You will work across issues where judgement and accuracy matter. The work is often sensitive, fast-moving and highly consequential. You will help translate complex legal and constitutional principles into clear, trusted advice for senior decision-makers. This role also plays a key part in the Cabinet Office election work programme, advising on key constitutional conventions at an important time in New Zealand’s democratic system. We are open to either a fixed-term agreement or a secondment arrangement for the period late September 2026 to early October 2027 to cover parental leave. About you We are looking for a lawyer with at least five years' post-qualification experience and a strong interest in constitutional law. You will bring: a good understanding of New Zealand's constitutional framework and executive government processes the ability to provide accurate, pragmatic and timely legal advice, including when issues are complex, novel or time-sensitive sound judgement, discretion, and an understanding of the political context while maintaining impartiality clear written and verbal communication skills strong relationship skills and the ability to work constructively with Ministers' offices, agencies and colleagues resilience and composure under pressure, including the ability to get up to speed quickly and manage competing priorities a current practicing certificate What we offer At DPMC, our work sits close to the action and supports the effective operation of government. Appointment will be based on skills and experience. Security requirements To be eligible for this position, you must have been a New Zealand citizen for at least 10 years. Alternatively, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or hold a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa and have been a citizen of the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years.
