Field Operations Assistant – Arable Field Trials Based in Ashburton | Full-time | Hands-on role in the field At Midlands, we’re passionate about growing innovation. We’re proud to help shape the future of food and fibre. We’re now on the lookout for a Field Operations Assistant – Arable Field Trials to join our Research and Development Team. Based at our Ashburton offices and research farms, this practical, hands‑on role supports the delivery of field trials involving crops, seed, and soil. You’ll work closely with experienced technicians and agronomists to help set up, maintain, and collect results from trials and demonstrations, with plenty of variety and flexibility required around weather and seasonal workloads. What you’ll be doing Operate and calibrate agricultural machinery for planting, spraying, irrigation, and cultivation. Assist with trial site preparation, planting, crop management, and harvesting. Carry out repairs and maintenance of farm machinery and equipment. Support the upkeep of field sites, including irrigation scheduling and monitoring water usage where required. Apply crop protection products in line with safety and compliance standards. Assist with field data collection, records, samples, and labelling. Help ensure trial sites, machinery, tools, and workspaces are tidy, organised, and ready for audits when required. Work collaboratively within a small, supportive R&D team to meet trial objectives. Assist with some stock work involving sheep and cattle. What you’ll bring Proven experience in agricultural field work. Confidence operating and maintaining agricultural machinery. Experience with irrigation systems, spraying, cultivation, and planting. A good understanding of safe work practices in agricultural settings. Physical fitness and comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Strong attention to detail and accuracy with record keeping. A positive, reliable, team‑focused attitude. A practical mindset, willingness to get stuck in, and flexibility around seasonal demands will set you up well in this role.
