Waikato Hospital, Hamilton | Fixed-Term (Maternity Leave Cover) Make a Difference in Breast Cancer Care Join a Leading Multidisciplinary Breast Service Fixed-Term 4 Months With Future Potential We are seeking an experienced General Surgeon with subspecialty training in Breast and Oncoplastic Surgery to join Waikato Hospital on a fixed-term basis to cover maternity leave. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a well-established breast service with a strong multidisciplinary focus and a growing oncoplastic practice. There may also be opportunities for longer-term employment for the right candidate. About the Role You will work within a collaborative and well-supported multidisciplinary breast service, delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across the Waikato region. Your week will include: Dedicated breast outpatient clinics General surgical outpatient clinics Operating lists covering both General Surgery and Breast Surgery Weekly breast multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs) Breast screening clinicsDiagnosis and management of benign and malignant breast conditions You will work closely with Breast Radiology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Plastic Surgery, Breast Care Nursing and regional colleagues to provide coordinated care throughout the patient journey. The role also offers opportunities to contribute to: Service development and quality improvement Clinical audit and research Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff Acute General Surgery services and on-call commitments Key Responsibilities Deliver high-quality elective and acute General Surgery services Assess and manage patients with benign and malignant breast disease Perform a broad range of breast surgical procedures, including: Breast-conserving surgery Mastectomy Sentinel lymph node surgery Axillary dissection Oncoplastic techniques (preferred) Participate in weekly breast MDMs and collaborative treatment planning Contribute to the acute General Surgery roster and dedicated acute theatre weeks Supervise and support fellows, registrars, house officers and medical students Participate in audit and quality improvement activities Foster a culture of collaboration, equity and clinical excellence This position is 40 hours per week, plus participation in the acute General Surgery on-call roster. About the Service The General Surgery service provides care across the Waikato region, delivering both secondary services for the local population and a number of tertiary services for the wider Te Manawa Taki region. The department includes: 23 Senior Medical Officers 4 Fellows 5 Trainees 18 Resident Medical Officers About You To be successful in this role you will have: Vocational registration in General Surgery with the MCNZ Fellowship-level training in Breast and Oncoplastic Surgery Experience managing the breadth of acute General Surgery presentations in a major hospital setting Excellent communication and collaborative working skills Current APC and medical indemnity cover Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in healthcare Ideally, you will also have: Membership of BreastSurgANZ or equivalent post-fellowship breast surgical training Experience in implant-based breast reconstruction About the Waikato Located in the heart of the Waikato, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato operates across multiple sites, with Hamilton City as our main campus and a network of communitybased hospitals throughout the region.
