Job Description

Hiab driver United Steel is seeking a Hiab driver to join our operations team in Christchurch, Central Canterbury. This is a full-time position that plays a vital role in our supply chain and logistics operations. As a Hiab driver, you will be responsible for safely transporting and delivering steel products and materials to our customers across the region, utilising our Hiab-equipped vehicles to load, secure, and unload cargo. This position is essential to maintaining our reputation for reliable delivery and excellent customer service in the warehousing, storage and distribution sector. Key responsibilities Operate Hiab-equipped vehicles safely and efficiently to transport steel products and materials to customer locations Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure the vehicle is in safe working condition Safely operate the Hiab crane to load and unload cargo, ensuring all items are properly secured and balanced Plan and optimize delivery routes to ensure timely arrival and efficient fuel consumption Maintain accurate records of deliveries. Communicate effectively with dispatchers, warehouse staff and customers regarding delivery times and any issues Adhere to all traffic regulations, health and safety requirements, and company policies whilst driving Assist with basic vehicle maintenance and report any mechanical issues promptly Provide professional customer service and represent United Steel positively in all interactions What we're looking for Valid New Zealand heavy vehicle license (Class 4 or higher) with a clean driving record Proven experience operating Hiab cranes or similar hydraulic loader equipment Demonstrated experience as a professional truck or delivery driver in a logistics or distribution environment Strong knowledge of road safety regulations and best practices for transporting heavy loads Ability to read and interpret delivery documentation, route maps and vehicle specifications Physical fitness and capability to perform manual tasks such as securing loads and basic equipment checks Excellent time management and organisational skills to meet delivery schedules Strong communication and customer service skills Reliability, punctuality and a professional attitude towards work Preferably, experience in the steel or manufacturing industry, or familiarity with handling metal products What we offer United Steel is committed to supporting our team members with a competitive remuneration package and ongoing career development opportunities.
