Instrument Technician

We are seeking a versatile, hands-on Instrument Technician to join our advanced manufacturing and engineering team at our Onehunga facility in Auckland. This is a genuinely roving, multi-skilled technical position — you might be changing a lightbulb one moment and commissioning a large-format 5-axis CNC machine or troubleshooting a complex robotic cell the next. You are the enthusiastic problem-solver who thrives on variety, loves untangling tricky technical issues, and never says ‘no’. With strong capabilities across electrical, instrumentation, control systems and general maintenance, you install, commission, maintain, repair and optimise a wide range of production machinery including industrial robots, CNC equipment, injection moulding machines and associated automation. Key Responsibilities Preventive & Corrective Maintenance: Perform regular scheduled maintenance and ad hoc repairs on production machinery, including industrial robots and automated systems, to maximise uptime and equipment reliability. Diagnose faults across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and control systems and implement effective repairs and component replacements. Installation, Commissioning & Upgrades: Lead or support the installation and commissioning of new machinery and equipment, including robotics, large format 5-axis CNC machines, injection moulding equipment and other advanced production assets. Configure, test, optimise and validate new installations to ensure they meet performance, quality and safety requirements. Control Systems, PLCs & Automation: Programme, modify and troubleshoot PLC logic and control systems to support production requirements. Work confidently with Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), servo drives, servo motors and related motion control equipment. Diagnose and resolve automation and instrumentation problems. Troubleshooting & Breakdown Response: Respond rapidly and effectively to equipment breakdowns and production interruptions, applying systematic diagnostic methods to identify root causes. Tackle complex technical problems with creativity and persistence, restoring equipment to service quickly while identifying opportunities to prevent recurrence. General Facility Support & Roving Duties: Provide broad technical support across the site, including general maintenance tasks such as lighting repairs and replacements, basic electrical work, and other ad hoc facility requirements as they arise. Act as a versatile, multi-skilled technical resource. Collaboration, Knowledge Sharing & Continuous Improvement: Work closely with production, engineering and operations teams to understand priorities and deliver timely, effective solutions. Share technical knowledge, identify opportunities for equipment improvement, and maintain up-to-date knowledge through ongoing learning and engagement with suppliers and OEMs. You’ll Bring Technical problem-solving: Outstanding diagnostic and fault-finding skills with the ability to quickly get to the root of complex mechanical, electrical, automation and control issues and deliver practical, lasting solutions. Hands-on practical aptitude: Genuinely enjoys getting hands dirty, working with tools and equipment in a real production environment, and thrives on the variety of a roving, multi-skilled role. Relevant experience & qualifications: Hands-on experience maintaining, installing, commissioning or troubleshooting industrial production machinery (preferably robotics, CNC equipment, injection moulding or automated systems). Proficiency with PLC programming/troubleshooting, VSDs, servo systems and instrumentation. A relevant trade or technical qualification (e.g. Electrician, Instrument Technician, Mechatronics or Automation) or equivalent practical experience. Self-motivation & resilience: Highly self-driven, proactive and able to work independently with minimal supervision. A strong ‘can-do’ attitude — never says ‘no’; approaches every challenge with positivity, persistence and determination to find a way through. Learning agility & curiosity: Enthusiastic about mastering new machinery, technologies and control systems; actively seeks out opportunities to learn and grow technical capability. Safety consciousness: Strong understanding of and commitment to safe working practices, particularly when working with live electrical systems, moving machinery and in an industrial environment. Communication & collaboration: Able to explain technical concepts in clear, practical terms to colleagues across production and engineering; works cooperatively as part of a team and builds strong working relationships.
