Senior Diversional Therapist – Dementia Day Programme Dementia Tai Tokerau – Whangarei, North Island About the role Dementia Tai Tokerau is seeking a Senior Diversional Therapist – Dementia Day Programme to join our team in Whangarei Central Northland. This is a 30 hour per week position that plays a vital role in delivering high-quality therapeutic activities and programmes for people living with dementia. As a Senior Diversional Therapist, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating engaging diversional therapy activities that promote wellbeing, maintain cognitive function, and enhance quality of life for our participants. This role is strategically important to our organisation, as it directly impacts the therapeutic outcomes and satisfaction of the individuals we support and their families. Key responsibilities Design, plan, and deliver person-centred diversional therapy activities tailored to the individual needs, abilities, and interests of participants with dementia Assess participants' therapeutic needs and preferences, creating individualised activity plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team Lead and supervise a team of day programme staff and volunteers, providing training, guidance, and mentoring to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality programmes Implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions including reminiscence therapy, cognitive stimulation, music therapy, art therapy, and sensory activities Monitor and document participants' responses to activities, maintaining detailed records and contributing to progress evaluations Liaise with family members, carers, and healthcare professionals to understand participant needs and communicate progress Ensure the safety and dignity of all participants during activities, implementing appropriate risk management strategies Contribute to continuous programme improvement by gathering feedback, evaluating outcomes, and adapting activities based on participant engagement and wellbeing indicators Maintain a safe, welcoming, and stimulating environment that encourages participation and social engagement Support the development and maintenance of activity resources, equipment, and therapy materials What we're looking for A recognised qualification in Diversional Therapy or a related field such as Occupational Therapy, Recreation Therapy, or Activity Coordination Significant experience working in diversional therapy, particularly within aged care or dementia-specific settings Demonstrated expertise in designing and delivering therapeutic activities for people living with dementia Strong knowledge of dementia-related conditions, behaviour management, and person-centred care approaches Proven leadership and team management experience with the ability to mentor and support junior staff and volunteers Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with participants, families, colleagues, and external stakeholders Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple activities and priorities simultaneously A compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach to working with vulnerable populations Current First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) A valid driver's licence and reliable transport (desirable) Understanding of health and safety regulations, safeguarding protocols, and duty of care responsibilities Ability to work flexibly and adapt to the changing needs of participants What we offer Dementia Tai Tokerau is committed to supporting the wellbeing and professional development of our staff.
