Learning Designer

Te Mahi Ako is seeking a Learning Designer (Fixed Term to December 2027) This role can be based anywhere in New Zealand, with the flexibility to work remotely or from our Auckland or Wellington offices. About the role As a Learning Designer, you'll work alongside colleagues and subject matter experts to create engaging learning and assessment resources that support ākonga in developing practical skills for the workplace. This role focuses on designing and developing high-quality learning and assessment resources for vocational and work-based learning programmes. You'll help ensure our resources are accessible, learner-centred, aligned to programme requirements, and support successful learning outcomes for a diverse range of ākonga (learners). You'll join a small, collaborative team that values quality, innovation and continuous improvement. Working across a variety of projects, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to learning that supports workplaces and communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Key responsibilities Design and develop engaging teaching, learning and assessment resources for online, face-to-face and blended delivery environments. Apply learning design best practice to ensure resources are accessible, inclusive and support ākonga success. Embed literacy and numeracy within learning and assessment resources where appropriate. Develop design plan, assessments, storyboards, and other supporting learning materials. Apply constructive alignment principles to ensure learning, assessment and programme outcomes work together effectively. Maintain the currency of learning and assessment resources, including updates resulting from New Zealand Qualification and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) and standard reviews. Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure resources align with programme requirements, graduate outcomes and industry expectations. Contribute to quality assurance activities, including resource reviews and continuous improvement initiatives. Effectively manage courseware assets and information in line with organisational processes and standards. About you You are an experienced Learning Designer who enjoys turning complex information into engaging, practical learning experiences. You understand the realities of vocational and work-based learning and have experience designing resources that support ākonga to apply their learning in real-world contexts. You'll bring: A tertiary qualification in learning design, education, adult learning, or equivalent experience. At least three years' experience developing teaching, learning and assessment resources within vocational education, work-based learning, or a similar environment, including assessment resources aligned to NZQA standards. Strong skills in creating both digital and print-based learning resources. An understanding of the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF), unit standards and skill standards. Experience using learning management systems and learning design tools, including Articulate and Adobe InDesign. Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro is desirable. The ability to balance quality, learner needs and project timeframes. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Strong ability to collaboratively design and develop learning and assessment resources that meet the needs of a diverse ākonga population, increase accessibility and reduce barriers to learning. Capability in, and confidence with, the fundamental concepts of te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori, along with a commitment to building knowledge and understanding their significance. A commitment to actively supporting Te Ao Māori and integrating Māori perspectives into learning design practice.
