Centra Forklifts (NZ) Ltd is the New Zealand distributor for Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks, with branches in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North and Christchurch. We support customers across transport, logistics, warehousing and manufacturing - and at the ports we look after a wide range of heavy container-handling and materials-handling equipment including earth moving equipment not just forklifts. Based full-time on site at the Port of Auckland, right on the waterfront, you’ll work with quality gear, realistic workloads and a team that knows your name - not just your employee number. The role We’re looking for an experienced Heavy Diesel Service Technician to support our port-based customers. This role is ideal for a heavy diesel mechanic who has worked with container-handling equipment and earth moving equipment (e.g. reach stackers, toplifts, big trucks, heavy forklifts,loaders and excavators) and enjoys variety and working directly with operations teams. You’ll service, maintain and repair a range of heavy machinery on site at the port from large IC forklifts through to other container-handling and yard equipment. Most of your time will be spent on the wharf and within the port environment, with some workshop support as required. No two days are the same: one day you’ll be on scheduled servicing, the next you’re fault-finding on a critical machine that’s holding up vessels or container movements. What you’ll be doing Servicing, maintaining and repairing a range of heavy container-handling and materials-handling equipment , including large IC forklifts. Diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults using service manuals, diagnostic tools and OEM systems. Dismantling and reassembling engines, transmissions, steering, braking and other major components. Repairing and replacing worn or defective parts, then testing and adjusting for correct performance. Working safely in a live port environment – liaising with operations, planning work around ship and yard movements, and following site rules. Completing jobs on a tablet/laptop using our field service system, with accurate notes and parts used. Taking part in ongoing technical training and development through OEM and Centra training programmes. What you’ll bring We’re looking for experienced trade-level technicians with relevant port/heavy equipment experience , not entry-level candidates. To be successful you will have: At least 3-5 years’ hands-on heavy diesel experience – e.g. container-handling equipment, heavy forklifts, port machinery, heavy trucks, plant or similar. Proven experience working on container-handling or comparable heavy materials-handling equipment in a port, intermodal or similar environment. A relevant trade qualification (e.g. Heavy Diesel / Heavy Automotive ) – or equivalent proven experience. Strong diagnostics across mechanical, hydraulic and basic electrical systems. Confidence working independently on customer sites, as well as pitching in as part of a small team. A can-do mindset, solid fault-finding skills and a "no problem, we'll sort it" approach with customers and port operations. High standards of workmanship, safety and personal presentation – you take pride in doing it right the first time. Reliable, trustworthy, energetic and self-motivated; you manage your own time and keep customers informed. NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa, and a full NZ Class 1 driver licence (additional classes an advantage). Please note: This is not an entry-level role. Pre-trade, apprentice-level, or light-vehicle-only candidates, and those without heavy diesel AND container-handling / comparable heavy equipment experience, will not be progressed for this position.
