Blenheim, MBH, NZ Full Time

Job Description

This is not a typical project management role. We are looking for an experienced Project Manager who understands that successful delivery is not driven by project plans alone. It comes from coordinating people, managing priorities, solving problems, communicating clearly, and maintaining momentum when conditions change. At Challenger, our projects sit at the intersection of clients, operations, technicians, suppliers, compliance requirements and commercial outcomes. Projects often involve multiple stakeholders, changing priorities, operational complexity, tight deadlines and demanding customer expectations. This role exists to bring all of those moving parts together and turn commitments into successful outcomes. Our client portfolio includes some of New Zealand's most recognised banking, commercial and government organisations. These clients expect professional project management, strong communication, disciplined execution and confidence when engaging with stakeholders at all levels. About the Role This role sits within Challenger's Delivery team, reporting to the Chief Delivery Officer and working closely with Service, Operations, Sales and Finance. You will manage a portfolio of client and internal projects across New Zealand, Australia and, from time to time, the Pacific. This role is not focused on managing a small number of large-scale programmes. Success comes from effectively managing multiple concurrent projects and workstreams, balancing competing priorities, stakeholders and delivery requirements across a diverse portfolio of work. These projects may include: Banking and security infrastructure projects Asset deployments and refurbishments Locking and access control initiatives Operational and technology projects Multi-site rollout activities This is a hands-on delivery role Success comes from understanding what is happening on the ground, identifying issues early, maintaining momentum and ensuring projects are completed professionally and commercially. What the Role Involves Managing projects from initiation through to completion and project close-out Developing and maintaining practical project plans Coordinating internal teams, technicians, suppliers and subcontractors Managing risks, issues, dependencies and project changes Providing clear communication and project reporting to clients and stakeholders Maintaining project documentation and delivery records Supporting commercial outcomes through effective scope, cost and variation management Ensuring projects are invoicing-ready and handed over appropriately at completion Contributing to improvements in project systems, processes and delivery practices Building trusted client relationships and maintaining visibility of client priorities, risks and future delivery requirements What We Are Really Looking For This is not a graduate role This is not a coordination role We are looking for someone who has already delivered projects independently, built confidence with clients, and understands how to balance client expectations, operational realities and commercial outcomes. Typical backgrounds may include: Project management within service, facilities, construction, engineering or technical industries Delivery roles supporting national client contracts Multi-site rollout and deployment environments Banking, security, telecommunications, infrastructure or field service sectors The successful candidate will bring: The ability to build trust and credibility through consistent follow-through and professional communication The ability to take ownership of projects and see them through to completion Confidence communicating directly with customers, suppliers and operational teams Commercial awareness and an understanding of the connection between delivery performance and business outcomes Strong organisation and prioritisation skills The judgement to make practical decisions and elevate early when required A bias for action and a willingness to solve problems rather than simply report them What Will Make You Successful Success in this role comes from the ability to operate confidently in a dynamic delivery environment. This includes: Managing competing project priorities without losing momentum Building credibility with clients and stakeholders Translating plans into real-world execution Maintaining visibility of risks and constraints before they become issues Balancing customer expectations with operational realities Identifying opportunities to improve systems, reporting and delivery processes Operating within established systems and processes, while constructively identifying opportunities to improve them Remaining calm, organised and solution-focused when priorities change Team & Leadership Expectations This role sits within a small, high-performing team. The successful candidate will: Bring a strong team-first mindset Build positive and productive working relationships across the business Be confident raising concerns when risks, delays or issues emerge Hold themselves and others accountable for agreed actions Contribute positively to the ongoing development of Challenger's project delivery capability This role plays an important part in shaping how Challenger delivers projects, helping improve consistency, visibility, communication and performance across our client portfolio.
