WEEKEND CARER ROLE WITH AUTISTIC TEEN

North Shore Clerical – Whakatane, North Island I am looking to hire an additional weekend part-time carer for shift work with my son's carer support team. I'm not going to pussy foot around the reality of these roles - my autistic teen son is a joy and a delight but can also be violent when frustrated. He needs two MALE carers with him at all times to manage his behaviour. Most of the time, he is pretty settled, and the role may even be a bit boring while he does his own thing and listens to the same song on repeat for hours on end, but occasionally there are meltdowns that require careful management. And that's where the carers have to be people who are prepared to step in and manage that aggression carefully. This would suit calm, patient men - people with experience with the disability sector, teacher aides, students, rugby players, fathers, brothers, ex-police, people with any experience with family with disability, and others who are not afraid to step in and help protect an autistic teen and prevent him from self-harming during his meltdowns. Showing care at all times will have the best results with Griffin. Some days we have none, and some days we have four or more. It is unpredictable. Each pair of carers will also double-check medications as Griffin takes a lot of pain meds every day, and they need to be checked each time. As this is an in-home role, it is legal to request male carers only. Griffin has a lot of showers and can emerge from the bathroom naked, and it is for his privacy that caregivers be male. Griffin likes to ask for things and needs regular reassurance, so a lot of patience and tolerance is required in any carer applying for the role. Griffin is autistic but also has an intellectual disability so has the function of a three-year-old in an adult body, so he needs help understanding/comprehending things. He loves to swing on his swing, jump on his trampoline, listen to music, eat rice crackers, meatballs, pizza and prawn toast, and he just needs constant watching. Griffin is verbal but not conversational. NO TRAINING or QUALIFICATIONS are required but you will receive training in managing Griffin's behaviour and will be helped to understand Griffin's behavioural triggers, management, food, and medication. A family/whanau member is always present, so you are not going to be left to deal with anything on your own. TWO carers will be rostered in two 8-hour shifts per day, plus one carer for 8 hours overnight. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week - we have recently lost a carer who has relocated closer to whanau up North, hence needing a new team member to cover some weekend shifts and as back-up for weekday staff to cover illness and holiday breaks. The Starting rate is above the living wage at $29.00. The hourly rate goes up for experience and also if you are quick to learn how to handle the role. All carers would be self-employed contractors so there is no sick or holiday pay, and withholding tax of 20% is paid to IRD on your behalf. You would be responsible for your other tax obligations such as child support, student loans, ACC levy etc but guidance can be given if necessary. Under the funding restrictions, I cannot employ people who are on student visas or candidates who do not have the right to work in New Zealand , I am sorry about that. This is a year-round, non-seasonal role. Would suit candidates from Whakatane, Edgecumbe, Te Teko, Kawerau, Awakeri and nearby villages and towns. Job location is 12km from Kawerau. There is no public transport so you must be able to get to the house.
