Hardware Engineer (Electronics & Mechanical) Pertronic Industries – Wingate, North Island Pertronic Industries designs and manufactures advanced fire detection equipment in its Wellington region facility. We also have sales and distribution offices in Auckland, Christchurch, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Phoenix (USA). We are a team of approximately 160 people with over 130 people based in the Lower Hutt head office facility. This office is only 100m away from the Wingate train station. We manufacture many different products and are experiencing significant growth in our domestic and overseas markets. What you’ll be doing We are seeking a talented and versatile Hardware Design Engineer (Electronics & Mechanical) to join our engineering team. This role bridges the gap between electronic and mechanical product development, taking ownership of PCB design and manufacturing while also leading sheet metal enclosure and mechanical component design. The successful candidate will work across the full product development lifecycle—from concept and prototyping through design validation, manufacturing, and production support. This is an ideal role for an engineer who enjoys solving multidisciplinary challenges and collaborating closely with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and supply chain teams. Key responsibilities include: Design multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs) for production using industry-standard ECAD tools. Develop PCB layouts with consideration for signal integrity, EMC/EMI, thermal management, manufacturability, and cost. Produce manufacturing documentation including Gerber files, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, BOMs, and pick-and-place data. Liaise with PCB fabrication and assembly suppliers to resolve design and manufacturing issues. Review PCB manufacturing outputs and support design-for-manufacture (DFM) and design-for-test (DFT) activities. Support prototype assembly, testing, debugging, and validation. Collaborate with firmware and hardware engineers during product development. Design sheet metal enclosures, brackets, panels, and mechanical assemblies for production. Create 3D CAD models and detailed manufacturing drawings. Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles for laser cutting, CNC punching, bending, welding, and assembly processes. Specify hardware, fasteners, finishes, and manufacturing tolerances. Coordinate with fabrication suppliers to optimise manufacturability and reduce production costs. Validate mechanical designs through prototyping, testing, and iterative improvement. Raising Engineering Change Orders What We're Looking For We're looking for a practical, solutions-focused engineer who enjoys turning ideas into well-engineered products and working across the full product lifecycle. Ideally, you'll bring: Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline. 3+ years of experience in product development or manufacturing engineering. Experience designing sheet metal components and assemblies. Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for both electronics and mechanical components. Experience using Altium Designer for PCB design and SolidWorks for mechanical design is highly desirable. Experience producing manufacturing documentation and engineering drawings. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Experience with rapid prototyping technologies including 3D printing.
