6mo ago , from SEEK Volunteer New Zealand About the Role This is a hands-on, in-class support role working with adult migrant learners at beginner level. Volunteers work alongside the lead teacher to help students build confidence in speaking and understanding everyday English. Depending on your experience and confidence, there may be opportunities to lead small group activities or parts of a lesson. However, this is not a fully independent teaching role. What You’ll Be Doing Supporting students during speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities Working with small groups or individuals who need extra help Explaining vocabulary and instructions using simple, clear English Encouraging participation and helping build students’ confidence Assisting with classroom setup and pack-down Occasionally leading short activities or parts of a lesson (if confident) What This Role Is (and Isn’t) Interactive, people-focused, and sometimes fast-paced A support role working closely with a teacher and students A great opportunity to gain practical classroom experience Not just observing or sitting in the background Not a fully independent teaching position Who This Would Suit Friendly, patient, and reliable people Confident English speakers Those interested in teaching, community work, or working with migrants People comfortable engaging with learners from diverse backgrounds Commitment Classes run on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings (9:30am – 12:30pm) We ask for a commitment of one day per week for at least one term Regular attendance helps build trust and continuity for our students Training & Support Lesson plans, materials, and guidance provided Ongoing support from the lead teacher Opportunity to complete an online training course (50% subsidised) Potential pathway into teaching opportunities within the programme Why Volunteer With Us Make a meaningful impact in the local migrant community Gain real classroom experience (not just observation) Be part of a supportive and welcoming team Build confidence in teaching and communication skills About Our Students Our learners are adult migrants who are at the beginning of their English journey. Many are learning English to support daily life in Auckland—such as speaking with their children’s schools, accessing services, and finding work. Your role helps create a safe, encouraging space where they can practise and grow in confidence.
