Job Description
Wellington City Council – Wellington Central, North Island Help shape the future of our city by ensuring development complies with the planning rules that create great places to live, work and play. Our Compliance and Advice Team is looking for a detail-oriented Planning Technician to assess building consent applications against District Plan requirements and help ensure development is carried out in accordance with the Resource Management Act and Building Act. Āu ake mahi | What you'll do As a Planning Technician, you will review building consent plans and supporting documentation, identify potential non-compliance, and work with applicants to resolve issues before construction begins. The role provides specialist planning advice, determines compliance with District Plan rules, and, where necessary, initiates enforcement action through the Form 4 process. You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, support regulatory processes, and work closely with planning, building, and compliance teams to deliver consistent and customer-focused outcomes. Ngā tohu me ngā wheako | Qualifications and experience You will hold a relevant tertiary qualification in planning, resource management, environmental studies, geography, law, or a related field. Experience in a territorial authority, regional council, or similar regulatory environment would be an advantage. You'll bring a sound understanding of the Resource Management Act and District Plan provisions, with the ability to interpret legislation and assess building consent plans and technical documentation. Strong communication, analytical, and organisational skills are essential, along with excellent attention to detail and sound judgement. A collaborative and customer-focused approach, coupled with the ability to manage competing priorities and handle sensitive information with discretion, will set you up for success in this role.
