Care | Kia Tika - We care for each other and do the right thing Courage | Kia Māia - We are brave, capable and confident The Maritime Security team ensures compliance, readiness and response related to maritime security so all New Zealand trading ports comply with the Maritime Security Act. The team is integrated into the national intelligence community and ensures that Maritime NZ contributes to the NZ National Security framework and informs all-of-government capability to respond to maritime security risks. It also works with Pacific Island Countries on security-related capacity building and maintains strong relationships with international partners on maritime security matters. New Zealand's maritime security sector is comprised of a number of government agencies and stakeholders with maritime domain risk management and support responsibilities. These agencies are brought together under the Maritime Security Oversight Committee (MSOC) and incorporate governance, policy, intelligence and operational coordination functions. Te tūnga | The role The Advisor Maritime Security is a member of Maritime NZ's Maritime Security team and supports the delivery of New Zealand's maritime security function. Working closely with ports, shipping companies, government agencies and industry stakeholders, you'll help ensure New Zealand's maritime sector remains secure and compliant with the Maritime Security Act 2004. The role provides advice and guidance to New Zealand ports and ships on maritime security requirements and supports assurance activities to verify ongoing compliance with maritime security legislation. This includes assessing security plans, supporting audits, contributing to security risk management activities, and keeping abreast of emerging maritime security risks and trends. You'll contribute to the development and continuous improvement of maritime security policies, standards, guidance and operational processes, while building strong relationships across industry, government and international partners. In the event of a maritime security incident, alert or warning, you'll support coordination between Maritime NZ, government response agencies and the maritime sector, helping Maritime NZ fulfil its responsibilities under the Maritime Security Act 2004. As the Advisor Maritime Security, you'll bring a blend of technical expertise, sound judgement and strong relationship management skills. You'll be comfortable working in a regulatory or operational environment, engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, analysing complex issues, and delivering results in a fast-paced setting. You'll also be committed to working collaboratively, fostering culturally safe practices, and supporting the security and resilience of New Zealand's maritime sector. You will bring – Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience. Experience in the maritime or comparable industry in a risk-focused operational or regulatory role. Confidence engaging with a range of industry stakeholders. Strong analytical and problem solving ability. Ability to obtain and maintain a national security clearance. Ability to travel nationally, sometimes at short notice. Well-developed relationship and interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience of workplace safety and knowledge of requirements. Proven experience of working under pressure and achieving goals within tight timeframes. Ability to work in a culturally safe and respectful manner, always being mindful of the cultural diversity of the industry and having regard to Te Ao Māori and Treaty of Waitangi principles.
