Company Scientific Representative – Antarctic Toothfish Fishery A once-in-a-career opportunity to combine science with one of the world's most unique fisheries. Sanford is seeking a Company Scientific Representative to join our Antarctic Toothfish programme, supporting scientific research and sustainable fishing operations in one of the most remote and highly regulated marine environments in the world. Working onboard a deep-sea fishing vessel during the Antarctic fishing season, you'll play a key role in ensuring the accurate collection, management and reporting of scientific data that supports responsible fisheries management. You'll work alongside the Skipper, vessel crew, observers and Sanford's science team to maintain the highest standards of data quality, compliance and reporting throughout each voyage including before, during and after the voyage. This is an ongoing independent contractor opportunity, with the Ross Sea Antarctic toothfish voyage forming the primary component of the role each year. Outside of the Antarctic season, you will continue supporting Sanford's wider fleet through a combination of vessel-based work, crew training and mentoring, product quality initiatives, vessel system audits, scientific and research reporting, planning and stakeholder meetings, and other operational duties as required. This provides ongoing engagement and earning opportunities throughout the year. This is a highly specialised role suited to someone with a scientific background who enjoys problem-solving, working independently and being part of a close-knit vessel team in a unique environment. Travel reimbursement is included in this role for your travel expenses throughout New Zealand. What you\'ll be doing Support scientific data collection and reporting during Antarctic toothfish fishing operations. Work with vessel crew and observers to help maintain accurate catch, biological, tagging, environmental and operational records. Check, reconcile and summarise data to support data quality and timely reporting. Understand and apply permit conditions, scientific protocols, CCAMLR requirements and Sanford reporting procedures. Identify data-quality, operational or compliance issues early and communicate them clearly. Contribute to voyage summaries, research reporting and post-season review work. Maintain professional communication with crew, observers, Sanford managers, scientists and relevant agencies. Provide onboard guidance and training to vessel crew on scientific sampling, data collection, fish tagging and compliance with CCAMLR regulations helping maintain consistent standards throughout the voyage. Support clear communication of scientific protocols and operational requirements, building crew understanding and encouraging accurate data collection practices. What you\'ll bring You are practical, resilient and comfortable working in a remote marine environment. You have good judgement, strong attention to detail and the confidence to work independently while remaining part of a close vessel team. You communicate clearly, ask questions when needed and take responsibility for accurate records and reliable reporting.Direct Antarctic, sub-Antarctic, CCAMLR, toothfish or longline experience will be highly regarded, but applicants with strong transferable experience in fisheries, marine science, observer work, compliance, environmental monitoring, data management, vessel operations or technical reporting may also be considered. What we\u2019re looking for Relevant experience in Antarctic, sub-Antarctic, deep-water, longline, observer, compliance, marine science, vessel-based or comparable field work. Strong numerical, spreadsheet, database and data-management skills. Ability to collect, check, reconcile and summarise scientific, operational or compliance data. Clear written and verbal communication, including technical or research reporting experience. Ability to understand and apply technical rules, permit conditions, scientific protocols and reporting requirements. Strong interpersonal, communication and training skills, with the ability to build capability and promote consistent scientific data collection practices onboard. Sound judgement, integrity and willingness to raise issues or seek advice when needed. Medical fitness and practical suitability for extended work at sea in remote Antarctic conditions.
