Nelson City Council is seeking an experienced and highly respected governance professional to serve as the Independent Chairperson of its Audit, Risk and Finance Committee. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the effective stewardship of public resources and support strong governance practices within local government. The Committee plays a critical role in providing independent oversight and advice to Council on financial management, risk, internal controls, audit activities, legislative compliance, and organisational performance. About the role | Kō tēnei tūranga mahi As Chairperson, you will lead the Audit, Risk and Finance Committee and foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement. Working closely with elected members, the Chief Executive, Executive Directors, internal and external auditors, you will guide the Committee's work programme and ensure robust oversight across key governance areas. Key Responsibilities Include Chairing Committee meetings. Providing independent leadership and oversight on financial reporting and performance. Monitoring strategic, operational, and emerging risks. Overseeing internal and external audit programmes and recommendations. Reviewing the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and internal control systems. Supporting sound financial management, treasury, and investment practices. Monitoring compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements. Promoting best-practice governance principles within the organisation. About you | Ko ngā pūmanawa ō We are looking for a highly credible governance leader with significant experience in audit, finance, risk management, public sector governance, or a related field. You Will Bring Extensive governance experience at board, committee, or executive level. Strong financial literacy and a thorough understanding of financial reporting and assurance processes. Demonstrated expertise in risk management and internal controls. Experience working with auditors and assurance providers. Excellent leadership, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills. Strong analytical thinking and independent judgement. An understanding of the local government environment and public sector accountability obligations. The ability to build effective working relationships while maintaining independence. The ideal candidate will bring significant experience from both private and public sector organisations. Desirable Qualifications And Experience Applicants with one or more of the following will be highly regarded: Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Practising Accountant (CPA), or equivalent financial qualification. Membership of the Institute of Directors or similar governance body. Experience chairing audit and risk committees. Senior executive, board, or governance experience in local government, public sector, or regulated industries. Professional qualifications in risk management, audit, law, governance, or finance.
