Ngāi Tahu Representation - Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum Trust

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is seeking a nomination to appoint a Ngāi Tahu representative to the Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum Trust. This is an opportunity to contribute to the governance and long-term future of a significant cultural institution within the Ngāi Tahu takiwā, protecting and promoting the rich histories, taonga, and pūrakau (stories) held by the Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum, while ensuring the Ngāi Tahu values, interests and aspirations are represented in the Trust’s work. About the Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum Trust The Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum Trust governs a significant regional museum with nationally important taonga Māori collections. It safeguards the Museum’s collections, heritage, and future direction, preserving and sharing the stories of Māori and Pākehā life on Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū (Banks Peninsula) for future generations. The Trust provides strategic leadership and governance for the Museum by: Determining and advancing the Museum’s vision, mission, and purpose. Developing strategic plans to guide future direction and decision-making. Providing oversight of the Museum’s programmes, operations, and outcomes. Ensuring the effective stewardship of the Museum’s financial, physical, and human resources. Protecting and enhancing the Museum’s assets and long-term sustainability. In doing so, the Trust seeks to: Preserve the unique character and heritage of Okains Bay. Foster strong relationships with mana whenua, particularly Ngāti Huikai represented by Te Rūnanga o Koukourarata, as well as the wider Banks Peninsula community and regional cultural institutions. Ensure the effective care, management, and protection of priceless taonga and collections. Support the delivery of engaging public and educational programmes that bring the Museum’s stories to life. Maintain strong governance practices that safeguard the Museum’s future and support its ongoing cultural and financial sustainability. About the role as a Trust Board Member As a Ngāi Tahu representative, you will provide a Ngāi Tahu perspective at the Trust table, helping to ensure tribal values, priorities and interests are reflected in the Trust's work. You will also maintain a strong connection with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu by keeping the organisation informed of matters of tribal significance and representing Ngāi Tahu views on issues considered by the Trust. Skills and Experience The ideal candidate will bring some of the following skills, experience, and attributes: Knowledge of, and ideally experience working within, the communities and sectors relevant to the Museum's work. A commitment to the bicultural foundations of the Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum and its strategic direction The ability to commit sufficient time to fulfil Trustee responsibilities and actively contribute to Board activities. A willingness to learn, engage, and support the ongoing work of the Museum. Trustees are encouraged to contribute beyond Board meetings and may choose to support the Museum by: Attending and assisting with Museum events. Participating in working bees and volunteer activities. Representing the Museum at relevant community events and meetings. Contributing to special projects aligned with their skills, knowledge, and experience. Meetings and remuneration Trust Board meetings are held bi-monthly.We estimate that new Board Members will contribute 40-60 hours annually to core Trustee duties.
