About the role We are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our growing IT support team in our Christchurch office. This is a full-time position that offers the opportunity to take on a leadership role within our Technical Department. As Senior Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for managing complex system infrastructure, providing technical guidance to junior staff, and ensuring optimal performance of our clients' IT environments. This role is integral to maintaining the high standards of service delivery that Novatek is known for and will see you working with a diverse range of technologies and client requirements. To be successful in this role, alongside the strong technical experience, you will bring with you a good sense of humour, strong work ethic, and a passion for helping people. Key responsibilities Design, implement, and maintain robust IT infrastructure solutions for multiple clients, ensuring high availability and security Provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for complex hardware, software, and network issues Lead, mentor, and supervise junior support staff and help desk technicians, fostering professional development and technical growth Develop and maintain comprehensive system documentation, including network diagrams, configuration guides, and disaster recovery procedures Conduct regular system monitoring, performance analysis, and capacity planning to optimise IT infrastructure Manage system upgrades, patches, and security updates whilst minimising downtime and business disruption Collaborate with clients to understand business requirements and recommend technology solutions that align with their objectives Establish and maintain best practices for system administration, security protocols, and IT governance Respond to critical incidents and outages, providing rapid diagnosis and resolution to restore service Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, sharing knowledge with the team Create and maintain strong documentation What we’re looking for 5+ years of experience in system administration, IT infrastructure, or a related field, with at least 3 years in a senior or leadership capacity Strong knowledge of Windows and Linux server environments, including installation, configuration, and maintenance Proven expertise in network administration, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and firewall management Experience with virtualisation technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, or similar platforms Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure and services (Azure, AWS, or comparable platforms) Proficiency in Active Directory management and user access control systems Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously whilst maintaining attention to detail Strong problem-solving skills with a logical approach to complex technical challenges Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders Experience mentoring and developing junior team members Relevant IT certifications such as Microsoft, CCNA, CompTIA Security+, or equivalent qualifications are highly desirable A commitment to ongoing professional development and staying abreast of technological advancements What we offer Novatek is committed to creating a supportive and rewarding workplace for our team members.
