This is an opportunity to spend your summer on the Coromandel Peninsula at holiday hotspots including boat ramps, at specific events and at popular walking tracks engaging with different people and making a significant contribution to stopping the spread of pests including kauri disease and exotic caulerpa. You will have: Been studying towards or have recently completed a tertiary qualification in Environmental or Resource Management, Ecology, Planning, Science, or a related discipline; or marketing or communications. Proven success at building relationships and resolving issues with internal and external stakeholders. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as being an engaged and active team member. The ability to engage a diverse range of people. A good level of initiative. A good level of computer literacy including across the Microsoft suite of products, and the ability to create and maintain resources and reports. Mō te tūranga | About the role: Based in Whitianga. As this is a seasonal summer position, applicants must have accommodation available in Whitianga or the surrounding area. Please indicate your accommodation plans when applying. As a Student with the WRC biosecurity team, you will be responsible for: Engaging with the public and local businesses, advising them on best practices to prevent the spread of marine pests and kauri disease. Identifying and attending key events and holiday hotspots to promote kauri and marine protection. Reporting monthly on engagement. Ensuring stocktake of Kauri and Marine merchandise is kept up to date. Writing an end-of-internship report summing up the work you’ve accomplished. This is a full-time role for a fixed term period of 13 weeks, starting in mid-November 2025 and ending early-mid February 2026. The role will be based out of the Waikato Regional Council office in Whitianga but will primarily work on boat ramps, at specific walking tracks and at summer events around the Coromandel Peninsula. You will be working a 40-hour week, primarily Wednesday to Sunday including during the Christmas period and on stat days (Christmas day excluded).
