Job Description

The Whitireia Community Law Centre Trust is looking to appoint a full-time lawyer to manage and supervise the operations of the Porirua Kāpiti Community Law Centre (PKCLC). PKCLC is located in the Porirua CBD and is one of 24 independent community law centres operating throughout New Zealand. We are a charitable trust and work with the Porirua and Kāpiti communities providing free legal information and education to these communities and targeted legal advice, assistance and representation to people living between Tawa and the Otaki bridge who have barriers to accessing justice. Our work is mainly directed at "poor law" (eg. tenancy, debt, PPPR, immigration, employment, consumer and minor criminal / traffic). About the role PKCLC is seeking applications from lawyers who have a commitment to social justice to join and manage our team of lawyers, JPs, admin staff, caseworkers and volunteers who are all committed to providing high quality legal services to our communities. We are especially interested in applicants with a demonstrated commitment to the community and to people who have barriers to accessing legal services. You will be responsible for fronting PKCLC and liaising with relevant government agencies, community organisations and local iwi. This is a permanent position reporting to the PKCLC trustees. To be successful in this role, you will need: A NZ practicing certificate and be qualified to practise on your own account. The ability to work well within a team and direct the delivery of high-quality legal services. Excellent organisational skills. A commitment to social justice and helping people with barriers to accessing justice, including vulnerable members of our community. An understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi.
