Engineering Team Leader | Civil & Land Development Some engineers naturally become the people others rely on. At Patersons, you’ll join a growing Christchurch engineering team where you’ll provide technical leadership, support the development of engineers across the entire business, and help maintain the quality and consistency of project delivery. This is a role for someone who enjoys mentoring others, sharing knowledge, and helping create practical outcomes without stepping away from the technical work itself. The role This is a hands-on senior engineering position with a strong technical leadership focus. You’ll work across a range of residential and land development projects, including multi-unit developments, accessways, driveways, subdivisions and broader development work. While remaining actively involved in project delivery, a key part of your role will be helping engineers develop their capability, providing technical oversight, and ensuring consistent standards across the team’s work. You’ll work closely with clients, councils, contractors, planners and surveyors to help projects move smoothly from concept through to construction. Your responsibilities will include: Civil engineering and land development design and oversight across a range of projects. Providing technical leadership and day-to-day guidance to engineers. Mentoring and developing junior and intermediate engineers. Undertaking technical reviews and quality assurance across engineering deliverables. Working directly with clients, councils and project stakeholders. Supporting project delivery across the wider Christchurch engineering team. Contributing to team capability, standards and continuous improvement. About you You’ll bring: 8+ years’ experience in New Zealand civil or land development engineering. Strong experience across land development and subdivision projects. Good working knowledge of NZ standards, consenting and council processes. Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical guidance within a professional environment. A practical and solutions-focused approach to engineering challenges. Confidence communicating with clients, contractors and project stakeholders. The ability to balance technical detail with broader project outcomes. CPEng status, or progress toward it, would be advantageous. You’re someone others naturally turn to for advice and support. You enjoy helping engineers grow, maintaining high technical standards, and bringing a calm, practical approach to challenges.
