Principal Advisor Environmental Planning

This role will provide expert technical leadership and strategic advice across a diverse portfolio of complex planning, consenting, and environmental management matters. About the team | Ko te rōpū nei The Environmental Planning team sits within our Professional and Technical Services & Design Unit and provides specialist planning expertise across transport, three waters, open space, and environmental projects. Working collaboratively across Council and with iwi, regulators, consultants, and community stakeholders, the team helps ensure major projects are delivered responsibly and in accordance with planning and environmental legislation. About the role | Ko te mahi nei As the senior planning expert within the team, you'll provide authoritative advice on complex environmental and resource management issues, support major infrastructure projects, and help guide high-profile decision-making. You'll also: Lead technical reviews of complex resource consent applications Assess and manage planning and environmental risks Provide expert advice on District Plan, Regional Plan and RMA requirements Prepare and review planning documentation, including resource consents and Environmental Management Plans Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders Mentor and coach planners to support capability and professional growth Represent Council in hearings and other planning processes when required. You will also bring extensive environmental planning experience, strong technical expertise, and the ability to influence outcomes across complex projects. You'll have: A degree or postgraduate qualification in Planning, Resource Management, or a related discipline Significant experience in environmental planning and resource consenting Sound knowledge of planning and environmental legislation Experience providing advice on complex or high-risk projects Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills A collaborative leadership style and passion for developing others.
