The Urban Liaison Team is a key initiative of the City Safety Plan, enhancing safety and well-being in Pōneke. This team reflects Wellington City Council's commitment to a vibrant, welcoming and safer central city for everyone. We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the community. As an Urban Liaison Officer, you’ll work as a high performing team to deliver safety initiatives, build strong community relationships, and coordinate with partners to address safety concerns proactively. About the role This is an operational role providing on-the-ground support across the central city. The team maintains a visible presence during key activity periods, ensuring consistent support for the community when it matters most. This is a full-time position (80 hours per fortnight), worked Monday to Sunday on a rostered basis. As a key initiative of the City Safety and Wellbeing Plan, the roster is designed to ensure community needs are met beyond standard business hours including evenings and weekends - with a focus on providing consistent and responsive support when it’s needed most. What you’ll do As an Urban Liaison Officer, you will: Be a visible, trusted presence in Pōneke’s CBD, building relationships with diverse communities, including vulnerable individuals and local businesses. Collaborate with Council teams, community organisations and Police to address safety and well-being issues. Proactively engage with stakeholders to find solutions to city safety concerns. Enforce Council by-laws when required, addressing anti-social behaviour and public safety issues with professionalism and fairness. Write clear, concise reports and contribute to improving city safety and well-being. Your days will be varied, engaging, and full of opportunities to make a tangible difference - whether you’re engaging with the public, supporting community initiatives, or collaborating with partners. What we’re looking for We’re seeking community-focused individuals with: Experience in social work and/or social services (for example, in government, health, law enforcement, or education) Experience working with vulnerable individuals Excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt to diverse people and situations A genuine passion for helping others, paired with the confidence to enforce by-laws when required Empathy, professionalism, and fairness in decision-making Experience facilitating conversations with diverse communities and stakeholders Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, curious mindset High-level literacy and report-writing skills We’re ideally looking for experienced individuals who bring maturity, sound judgement, and mana within a team environment - those who naturally support and mentor others. Salary range $79,640 – $93,694 per annum, depending on skills and experience. About us We're Working for Wellington.
