Lead Developer

Our client who are a well‑established government organisation delivering services that support New Zealanders across the country. We are recruiting multiple skilled Lead Developers to join a collaborative technology team responsible for building and enhancing reliable, enterprise‑grade systems. The Role This role is well suited to an experienced developer who brings strong leadership and mentorship experience and enjoys working on backend‑focused development while contributing within a modern, full‑stack environment. You will be involved in the design, build, and ongoing improvement of core applications, working alongside front‑end specialists and wider delivery teams. Key Responsibilities Lead and mentor developers , providing coaching, technical guidance, and support for professional growth Design and develop high-quality backend services using Java and Spring Boot Build and maintain APIs that integrate with modern front‑end applications Apply best practices around code quality, testing, and maintainability Conduct code reviews, promote engineering standards, and ensure delivery of high‑quality solutions Make technical decisions and provide direction when evaluating design, architecture, and implementation options Work closely with product, QA, and UX team members in an agile environment Remain hands‑on with development while providing technical leadership across the team Skills & Experience Proven experience leading, mentoring, or coaching within software development teams Strong commercial experience with Java and Spring Boot Experience with DB2 or other enterprise relational database technologies Experience with or exposure to TypeScript and React (desirable) Solid understanding of RESTful APIs and backend system design Proven ability to conduct code reviews and drive engineering best practices Experience making technical decisions and providing direction across development teams Understanding of application architecture, solution design, and scalable system development Experience working in agile delivery teams Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem‑solving skills What’s on Offer Meaningful work within a large and stable public sector environment Highly flexible working arrangements , including hybrid options Supportive, inclusive team culture Competitive salary reflecting senior‑level experience Location Based in Wellington, New Zealand , with flexibility around office and working from home. #J-18808-Ljbffr
