Job Description
About the Opportunity We are recruiting an experienced Surfacing Operator to join our Nelson team. This permanent role is suited to a reliable operator who takes pride in delivering high-quality road surfacing and maintenance works. You will work as part of a civil construction crew, operating surfacing plant and equipment to support resealing, chipseal, asphalt and other pavement treatment programmes across the Nelson region. Key Responsibilities Operate surfacing plant and associated equipment safely and efficiently, including but not limited to pavers, asphalt rollers, chip spreaders, broom/sweeper trucks and bitumen sprayers. Carry out routine plant checks, basic maintenance and cleaning to ensure equipment is safe and fit for purpose; report defects promptly to supervisors. Coordinate with the site team, contractors and clients to ensure efficient workflow, correct material application and consistent quality control. Adhere to all health, safety and environmental policies, participate in site inductions, and contribute to a positive safety culture on site. Skills & Experience Proven experience operating surfacing plant or relevant civil construction equipment on road projects. Relevant plant tickets or NZQA qualifications for surfacing plant operation would be an advantage. Experience working to specification for chipseal, reseal or asphalt applications, including an understanding of materials and application techniques. Knowledge of NZ health and safety legislation and safe work practices in road construction environments. Good communication and teamwork skills with the ability to liaise professionally with supervisors, subcontractors and the public. New Zealand driver’s licence (Class 2 or higher advantageous) and the legal right to work in New Zealand.
