Job Description
We are seeking a capable and commercially minded Accountant to join our Christchurch-based construction business. This is a hands-on mid-level role suited to someone with solid accounting foundations and an interest in the construction sector. You will be responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of the business – from accounts payable and receivable through to payroll, job costing, and month-end reporting. You'll work closely with Project Managers and the senior leadership team to ensure financial data is accurate, timely, and decision-ready. Key responsibilities Process subcontractor and supplier invoices accurately and on time, in line with NZ payment terms and agreed contractual schedules Perform three-way matching of purchase orders, delivery dockets, and invoices Code invoices to appropriate cost centres, jobs, and general ledger accounts Prepare payment runs for approval in accordance with company delegated authority Prepare and issue progress claims, milestone invoices, and customer tax invoices in accordance with NZ contract terms Process weekly or fortnightly payroll for both salaried and waged employees, including site-based staff Ensure compliance with the Holidays Act 2003, Minimum Wage Act, and applicable employment agreements Prepare and file GST returns via myIR in compliance with the Goods and Services Tax Act 1985 Perform regular bank reconciliations across all company accounts Maintain accurate job cost records across all active construction and civil projects About you Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline 3–6 years' hands-on accounting experience, ideally within construction, civil engineering, or a project-based business Demonstrated experience with Xero or another cloud-based accounting system Sound knowledge of NZ GST, PAYE, and payroll legislation (Holidays Act 2003, Minimum Wage Act) Practical understanding of job costing, WIP, and project-based financial reporting Experience preparing and filing GST returns via myIR High accuracy in data entry, reconciliations, and financial reporting Ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders Proactive in identifying and resolving issues without being prompted Comfortable working in a fast-paced, project-driven environment with shifting priorities Competitive salary of $70,000 – $90,000 per annum, benchmarked to the Christchurch construction market Employer KiwiSaver contributions in line with legislative requirements Four weeks' annual leave plus 11 public holidays in accordance with the Holidays Act 2003 Supportive team environment with direct access to senior leadership Involvement in a wide range of Canterbury construction and civil projects Southern Cross Health membership benefits (after 3 months) #J-18808-Ljbffr
