Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor (Part time) South Wairarapa District Council – Wellington, North Island We're seeking a part-time Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor (20 hours per week) to join our team. In this role you'll provide guidance, advice and support to ensure Council meets its obligations under the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015. You'll be responsible for maintaining, improving and administering Council's health, safety and wellbeing systems, policies, procedures and supporting resources. You'll act as a reliable and knowledgeable point of contact for all health and safety matters across the organisation, supporting a strong safety culture and continuous improvement in health safety and wellbeing. While the hours and days are flexible, there will be times when you'll need to be adaptable to meet organisational needs. We would also be interested in hearing from an experienced HSW professional who may be available as an interim contractor while we undertake recruitment for this role. Key responsibilities Provide guidance, advice and support to ensure Council meets its obligations under the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 Maintain, improve and administer Council's health, safety and emergency management systems, policies, procedures and supporting resources Coordinate and support the delivery and continuous improvement of health and safety accreditation programmes and internal audits Act as a reliable and knowledgeable point of contact for all health and safety matters across the organisation Assist managers and staff to understand and meet their health and safety responsibilities, including risk assessment, risk management and contractor safety requirements Manage health and safety reporting, support incident investigations and ensure statutory requirements (including notifiable events) are met Promote good health and safety practices through communication, induction support, training assistance, inspections and continuous improvement activities Lead Councils health and safety education and improvement programmes About you You’re someone who enjoys working collaboratively and making a positive impact across an organisation. You'll bring a practical, solutions-focused approach to health, safety and wellbeing, and take pride in supporting others to understand and meet their responsibilities. You’re confident building relationships at all levels and contributing to a supportive team environment, and you'll bring: Tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) in Health & Safety or a related field, with 3–5 years' advisory experience Sound knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015, auditing methods, data analysis and reporting Strong communicator who can advise, negotiate and build positive relationships across the organisation Uses sound judgement, takes initiative, adapts well to change and manages competing priorities effectively Collaborative, detailed‑focused and able to influence others through evidence‑based, practical advice Demonstrate and uphold SWDC core values (Pride, Manaakitanga, Collaboration and Customer-First) What we offer At South Wairarapa District Council, we are committed to creating a positive and inclusive work environment.
