We’re on the hunt for two equally passionate high achievers to join our Summer Internship Program. We have a range of exciting R&D ideas in development and need your help to turn them into practical software solutions for marine products and testing. You will join the Test Automation team and contribute across several project streams. These include expanding automated test coverage for our large portfolio of multifunction displays (MFDs), developing marine device simulators, and building tools that transform vessel‑simulation data into realistic navigation scenarios. You may help create simulators for radar, sonar, IP cameras, and NMEA 2000 devices and sensors found on vessels like autopilot, weather sensors, VHF and etc. Another project will use a vessel‑driving game as a data source and develop a conversion program that translates game output into inputs for a vessel navigation‑path simulator. Alongside this work, you will contribute to the automation framework and help transform thousands of manual regression tests into reliable automated coverage. Essential Functions: Design and develop simulators for marine equipment such as radar, sonar, IP cameras, and NMEA 2000 devices and sensors. Model realistic vessel data, including wind speed, wind direction, weather, navigation, and other onboard sensor information. Develop a data‑conversion application that translates output from a vessel‑driving game into inputs for a vessel navigation‑path simulator. Contribute to the software test automation framework and convert thousands of manual regression test cases into automated coverage across more than 40 products. Use coding and AI/ML‑assisted tools, including GitHub Copilot, to prototype solutions, develop tests, analyse results, and investigate failures. Document designs and test coverage, validate solutions against real product behaviour, and collaborate with the Test Automation team in agile processes. Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way. Qualifications: You are currently studying a Software/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering degree or similar, ideally in your 3rd year of study. You demonstrate technical knowledge, a practical engineering and quality mindset, and a genuine interest in simulation, software development, or test automation. You have a methodical approach to problem‑solving and are comfortable writing, debugging, and maintaining code. Experience with test automation, device or game simulation, data conversion, networking, NMEA 2000, or AI‑assisted coding is an advantage, but curiosity and a willingness to learn matter most. In return, you’ll learn from experienced software and quality engineers while building tools that have a measurable impact on product development, test quality, and release efficiency. Internship Highlights: The Test Automation team plans to host two interns as part of our wider Intern Program. Over the 10‑week period, you’ll collaborate with your intern cohort on a set project and present your work to the business. Some interns may be invited to join the Navico graduate intake the following year. For students to be eligible for the grant they must: Have studied or be studying at a New Zealand tertiary education institute (note: students who have completed study overseas are not eligible). Be studying at NZQA level 6‑10, or if study has been completed, the closing date of the last semester must be less than 12 months ago. Be studying science, technology, engineering, design or business. Be legally permitted to work in New Zealand. Not have been previously employed at the business unless part‑time or temporary.
