The Opportunity We’re seeking an experienced Health and Safety Advisor to join our pioneering team at New Zealand’s first Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) Facility in Wellington. This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of advanced sludge treatment operations while driving safety excellence. You’ll be 80% field-based, providing front‑line health and safety compliance support with a focus on process safety, risk management, and operational excellence. What you’ll be responsible for Process Safety: Implement, monitor, and audit management systems to ensure adherence to safety protocols Integrate Permit to Work, LOTO, and High Risk Management Standards (HRMS) Steward critical control management systems and escalated deviations to the SMF Supervisor Support operational teams in applying appropriate tools to manage critical risks Compliance: Conduct inspections and audits in accordance with internal schedules Monitor operations against company, client, and legislative requirements Communicate and implement changes to legislation, regulations, and standards Finalise and communicate audit findings; coach operations to close out agreed actions Systems & Documentation: Support development and maintenance of site SHEQ management plans Develop JSEAs, Plant Risk Registers, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Emergency Plans Generate safety critical control points and monitor compliance Delivery: Implement injury prevention and wellbeing programs Deliver SHEQ‑related training and communications Facilitate risk assessments and safe operating procedure development Build AlwaysSafe Culture through toolboxes, interactions, and hazard reporting Support safe installation and operation of new equipment Reporting & Analysis: Identify and report on high‑risk factors Monitor SHEQ strategies and track effectiveness Maintain comprehensive records of inspections, findings, and audits Teamwork: Function as an effective member of the VANZ SHEQ team Maintain positive working relationships with management, employees, and external parties What you’ll need to be successful Essential Qualifications & Experience: New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety (Level 4) or equivalent Industry experience in Process Safety, LOTO, and Management of Change (MOC) Experience implementing safety systems Working knowledge of all relevant Safety legislation Current Driver's License Desirable Qualifications: ICAM Lead Investigator Training Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessing First Aid Certificate Key Attributes: Safety‑focused and respected within the workplace Excellent safety knowledge and technical skills Excellent written and verbal communication abilities Intermediate to advanced computer skills (Google Suite) Excellent problem‑solving and decision‑making capability Self‑motivated with a positive, professional image Strong ability to prepare written documentation and reports Highly customer‑service focused and team‑oriented Solutions‑focused and influential Excellent time management and planning skills What’s on offer A great team focused working environment Opportunities for professional growth and development Stable employment with a reputable, world leading, 3 waters Network focused organisation Meaningful work that contributes to the well‑being of our community and keeps the cogs of society turning.
