Development Team Lead

This newly created role will bring together development teams across three core products, creating clearer technical direction, stronger delivery practices, and more connected ways of working. You will lead experienced development teams and a centralised testing team while remaining involved in technical decision‑making, with scope to influence engineering practices, improve delivery, and introduce practical uses of AI to strengthen existing systems. The role offers a balance of people leadership, technical direction, and strategic input, allowing you to make a genuine impact on digital products that support healthcare delivery across Aotearoa New Zealand. What you will do: Lead multiple development teams and dedicated testing team through team leads. Provide technical guidance while maintaining responsibility for delivery, quality, and team performance. Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Architects, and key stakeholders to prioritise and deliver work. Oversee project delivery, releases, operational support, and continuous improvement initiatives. Coach and develop team leaders, building a high‑performing engineering culture. Improve development practices, delivery processes, and software quality across the team. Identify practical opportunities to use AI to improve systems and ways of working. Skills and experience we are looking for: Proven experience leading software development teams, including managing team leads. Strong technical background with the ability to guide engineering decisions and delivery. Commercial experience using AI to improve systems, processes, or software delivery. Experience delivering and supporting business‑critical applications. Sound knowledge of software development lifecycle practices, release management, testing, and modern engineering standards. Comfortable working with senior stakeholders and balancing competing priorities. Confident communicator who can challenge ideas when needed and manage difficult conversations professionally. Practical leadership style with strong coaching and performance management skills. Relevant tertiary qualification in IT, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience. In addition to the skills and experience we are looking for; to be considered for this role you will also be: Christchurch based, with the ability to work primarily from the office.
