Job Description
The Linux Engineer is a full-time, permanent position based in Hawke's Bay that plays a critical role in maintaining, securing, and continuously improving EIT's Linux-based infrastructure and enterprise platforms. Working within Digital, this position ensures the reliability, performance, security, and availability of systems that support learning, teaching, and organisational operations. The appointing salary for this role will be between $95,000 and $105,000, dependent on skills and experience. The Linux Engineer is based in Digital, reporting to the Digital Operations Manager and will be responsible for: Taking technical ownership of EIT's Linux server infrastructure and associated enterprise applications. Maintaining, securing, and optimising Linux operating systems and related services. Developing and improving infrastructure automation using Ansible and other approved tools. Monitoring system performance, capacity, availability, and proactively resolving issues. Managing Linux patching, upgrades, and lifecycle maintenance activities. Supporting cybersecurity initiatives through vulnerability management and security hardening. Administering and supporting enterprise platforms, databases, and Linux-hosted applications. Collaborating with infrastructure, networking, cloud, and security teams to deliver integrated solutions. Maintaining technical documentation, operational procedures, and system standards. Providing second and third-level technical support and participating in on-call support arrangements as required. To be successful in this role you will have: A relevant tertiary qualification and/or industry certification. 3 to 5 years' experience in Linux systems administration or infrastructure engineering. Experience with Linux patch management, security hardening, and lifecycle management. Experience with infrastructure automation tools such as Ansible. Experience supporting enterprise applications and Linux-hosted platforms. Experience administering MariaDB and/or Oracle database environments. Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, routing, and switching. Excellent communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships and provide practical technical advice to stakeholders.
