Job Description
About the role We’re looking for a Field Supervisor to lead the day‑to‑day paving and field‑testing operation at our Christchurch based civil engineer laboratory. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll oversee field‑testing workflow, support and develop technicians, and make sure testing is delivered safely, on time, and to a high standard. You’ll be in amongst the work, balancing people leadership with practical testing support. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you’ll work closely with laboratory technicians, the administration booking team, paving teams, engineers, and the Aggregate Supervisor to keep work moving and customers well supported. This role is typically Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pm, with occasional changes to start and finish times, including weekend or night work when required. If you’re comfortable with field‑based work, changing work patterns, and taking ownership of high standards, you’ll fit right in. Key responsibilities Lead the daily field‑testing operation, plan technician workloads, and make sure work is completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Supervise, support, and develop laboratory team members, including providing guidance, motivation, training, and helping technicians progress their capability. Maintain strong quality, safety, and environmental standards, including ensuring compliance with laboratory procedures, IANZ requirements, ISO17025, PPE expectations, and site risk controls. Act as a key contact for field‑testing requests, liaise with internal teams and customers, and ensure test results and updates are communicated in a timely way. Support technical delivery by contributing to testing, equipment calibration and maintenance, audit demonstrations, testing improvements, and regulatory responsibilities for nuclear density meters as principal licensee and Radiation Safety Officer. Qualifications We’re looking for someone with A trade qualification in materials testing or a similar field. A competent understanding of material properties and at least 3 years’ laboratory experience. Proven ability to lead and motivate team members while staying practical, organised, and delivery focused. Strong problem‑solving skills, a proactive approach, and the ability to build good working relationships with customers and internal teams. A safety‑first mindset, reliable work ethic, and a collaborative, respectful approach. Good work, good benefits At Fulton Hogan, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our people and giving them the tools and opportunities they need to succeed and grow with us. You’ll have access to: Medical insurance and Life insurance after the eligibility period. KiwiSaver employer contributions after service milestones, up to 7%.
