Job Description
Senior Automation Engineer (Software Consultant) Senior Automation Engineer (Software Consultant) Help shape quality across one of ASB's most critical banking platforms Quality, resilience and reliability matter when you're working on technology that sits at the heart of everyday banking. This is an opportunity to join ASB's Host Platform and help modernise how quality is engineered across a complex enterprise environment that supports core banking services. As a Senior Automation Engineer, you'll design and build automation solutions that improve confidence in platform change, reduce manual effort, and support the ongoing evolution of ASB's core banking technology. Rather than working with traditional front-end testing tools, you'll be focused on automating complex backend and Host-based transactions, solving unique engineering challenges and helping lift automation capability across the platform. You'll join a team that combines operational excellence with platform modernisation. It's a role where you'll have the opportunity to influence how testing and quality engineering are approached, while contributing to technology that New Zealanders rely on every day. About the Team The Host Platform sits within ASB's Core Tribe, a technology area responsible for some of the bank's most important platforms and services. Core Tribe balances the need to keep critical banking systems stable, secure and resilient while continuing to modernise the technology that powers them. The team works across platform operations, technology lifecycle management, regulatory requirements and large-scale transformation initiatives, creating a unique environment for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges. About the Role This role exists to strengthen and evolve ASB's automation capability within the Host Platform. You'll be responsible for developing automation strategies, designing custom automation solutions, and helping the team improve quality throughout the software delivery lifecycle. Working closely with engineers, analysts and stakeholders, you'll ensure testing is embedded into delivery, enabling faster, safer and more reliable change. Key Responsibilities Develop and evolve automation strategies that align with platform delivery and release schedules. Design, build and maintain automated testing solutions for complex Host and backend transactions. Reduce manual testing effort through scalable automation approaches. Execute and optimise automated test suites to identify defects, risks and performance issues. Configure and maintain test environments, automation frameworks and supporting tooling. Partner closely with engineers and stakeholders to embed quality practices throughout the SDLC. Contribute to release confidence through effective test coverage and validation activities. Maintain high-quality documentation, reporting and testing artefacts. Support platform resilience through quality assurance activities linked to platform maintenance and change delivery. Identify opportunities to improve engineering efficiency through automation, tooling and emerging technologies. About You You're an experienced automation professional who enjoys solving problems that don't always have an off-the-shelf solution. You bring a strong engineering mindset, are comfortable working in complex enterprise environments, and enjoy designing automation approaches for systems that sit beneath the customer interface. You'll thrive if you're naturally curious, enjoy collaborating with others, and are motivated by improving quality through technology. This role will suit someone who enjoys working across legacy and modern platforms, can balance strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, and is excited by the opportunity to help shape the future of quality engineering within a large technology organisation. Key Skills & Experience Must-have Significant experience delivering automation solutions within complex enterprise environments. Strong experience with test automation design and implementation. Experience developing automation frameworks and custom automation solutions. Solid software engineering capability using C# and .NET. Strong understanding of DevOps, DevSecOps and software delivery lifecycle practices. Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and version control systems. Ability to analyse complex technical problems and translate them into effective automation approaches. Strong technical documentation and communication skills. Experience partnering with cross-functional technology teams to improve quality outcomes. A proactive approach to continuous improvement and problem solving. Nice to have Experience automating Host, mainframe or complex backend transaction processing environments. Experience within banking, financial services or other highly regulated industries.
