Scientific Officer, National Metabolic Screening Programme - LabPLUS

About the Role We are inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified scientists for a full‑time Scientific Officer in the Newborn Screening section of LabPlus, Auckland. The role involves working closely with the current Scientific Officer and includes: Routine running and troubleshooting of newborn screening assays, including in‑house expanded screening using tandem mass spectrometry. Contributing to the development of new assays. Training and mentoring staff. Leading the interpretation and reporting of results. Liaising with clinical staff and ensuring Prevention Directorate accreditation requirements are met. Maintaining and developing the in‑house middleware. Reviewing newborn screening protocols. The position is based in the Specialist Chemical Pathology department at LabPlus, a nationally accredited IANZ laboratory located in Auckland. LabPlus operates as a major referral laboratory for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. About You We look for a candidate with: A current annual practising certificate and registration (or qualifications that will lead to registration) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand. An MSc, PhD, or higher scientific qualification. Advanced knowledge of tandem mass spectrometry with at least 2 years of hands‑on experience. Highly developed communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. Excellent organisational and advanced computer skills, including experience working with large data sets. Experience with research and method development that has led to publications or presentations.
