Job Description

\n Our purpose is to empower New Zealand’s energy future, enabling a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable, secure electricity system.\n

Our context: Few electricity organisations globally operate across grid ownership, power system operation, renewable integration, and HVDC transmission. At Transpower, these responsibilities come together in our role at the centre of New Zealand’s national electricity system. The scale and complexity of our work programme is expected to more than double in the next five years. To meet this challenge at pace, we are evolving the way we work, strengthening capability, and positioning ourselves to deliver the infrastructure, planning, and system outcomes New Zealand will need for decades to come.

Grid Development\n

Grid Development is the division that shapes the future of New Zealand’s transmission network. By bringing together network strategy, integrated planning, investment management, project engineering, technical capability, and governance, we will ensure the National Grid continues to meet customer, system, and long-term energy needs.

The opportunity – a new enterprise leadership role\n

As a member of the Grid Development Leadership Team, you’ll work enterprise-wide to set the strategic direction and framework for the newly established Investment Management team within Grid Development. You’ll shape how Transpower’s investments deliver agreed outcomes, benefits, and enduring value for New Zealand.

\n
    \n
  • Leadership and alignment: leading the function and influencing executives, governance forums, customers, regulators, stakeholders, and partners.
  • \n
  • Funding and investment advice: supporting major capital, listed project, and regulated funding proposals with evidence-based advice.
  • \n
  • Portfolio prioritisation and trade‑offs: owning prioritisation frameworks, decision rights, and transparent trade‑off decisions.
  • \n
  • Investment value and outcomes: ensuring base, customer, and major capital value chains deliver intended benefits.
  • \n
\n

You’ll build and lead your team of Investment Value Managers and Asset Grid Investment advisory professionals, who convert customer, asset, and system needs into integrated investment decisions. This requires the ability to balance value, cost, scope, quality, risk, customer outcomes, regulatory expectations, and delivery constraints. You’ll also play a key role in maturing the operating model, clarifying accountabilities and interfaces, and ensuring investment decisions are integrated across planning, delivery, commercial, customer, and system outcomes.

Your leadership profile\n

We are interested in leaders who bring enterprise‑level investment judgement, systems thinking, portfolio discipline, commercial insight, and the ability to influence complex decisions. Deep electricity sector experience is valuable, but not essential. You will bring leadership experience across complex investment, portfolio, infrastructure, asset, capital works, or value‑stream environments, along with sound judgement in ambiguity, commercial acuity, and confidence interpreting financial and performance information. Delivery‑oriented, you’ll have a track record of influencing senior stakeholders, leading change, and building inclusive, high‑performing teams. In your CV we’ll be looking for evidence of:

\n
    \n
  • Executive or senior leadership accountability for significant investment, portfolio, infrastructure, asset, capital works, or value‑stream functions.
  • \n
  • Leadership of senior managers or specialist teams, including examples of building capability, improving performance, and strengthening accountability.
  • \n
  • Accountability for business planning, performance, resourcing, and budget management within a complex function.
  • \n
  • Portfolio prioritisation, investment governance, risk and assurance, trade‑off decisions, benefit delivery, value realisation, and performance improvement across complex portfolios.
  • \n
  • Commercial decision‑making that balances value, cost, risk, delivery constraints, customer outcomes, and long‑term objectives.
  • \n
  • Highly effective communication skills and the ability to build alignment with executives, governance forums, regulators, customers, delivery partners, or industry stakeholders.
  • \n
\n

While not essential, please tell us if you have experience supporting major capital, listed project, or regulated funding proposals. Exposure to electricity, regulated infrastructure, utilities, transport, or other asset‑intensive environments would be advantageous but is not essential.

Join us at Transpower\n

At Transpower, our people are connected by purpose: empowering New Zealand’s energy future. We bring diverse perspectives together to solve complex challenges, make considered decisions, and deliver work that matters for generations to come. As a senior leader, you’ll be part of an organisation where visibility, connection, and communication matter. We offer intellectually stimulating work, ongoing learning, and a range of health, wellbeing, and insurance benefits. Learn more here: Staff benefits | Transpower
