Job Description
Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role Are you passionate about using advanced numerical modelling to solve complex oceanographic challenges? We are seeking an experienced Scientist to join our Project Consultancy and Operational Oceanography Teams within the Research and Innovation Hub. This is a cross-functional role where you will collaborate with Ocean, Atmospheric, and Data Science teams to provide high-quality numerical modelling and analytical solutions. Your work will primarily focus on data analysis, code development, and scientific research to support a variety of consultancy and development projects world-wide, however you will also get the opportunity to be involved with the operational systems and teams. You will play a key part in ensuring MetService remains at the forefront of oceanographic developments and help maintain the continuity of our critical services. Key Responsibilities Technical Modelling & Analysis Undertake coastal wave modelling (phase-resolving and phase-averaged) and hydrodynamic assessments using systems such as SWASH, SWAN, XBeach, ROMS, SCHISM or similar. Implement Lagrangian and Eulerian particle tracking to support project initiatives. Conduct quality control and analysis of measured and modelled oceanographic and atmospheric data. Research & Development Research and deliver innovations that align with business goals, contributing to long-term R&D plans. Develop performant code and automated forecasting/hindcasting solutions. Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement Write technical and scientific reports to a high standard, communicating complex science clearly to diverse audiences. Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external project stakeholders He Kōrero Mōu – About You You are a self-starter who thrives in an agile, multi-disciplinary environment. You will bring: A post-graduate qualification (M.Sc. or PhD level) in a relevant physical science. Proven proficiency in scientific programming, specifically Python or Matlab, within a Linux/HPC environment (desirable). Expertise in configuring and running open-source oceanographic models (e.g., SWASH, SWAN, XBeach, ROMS, SCHISM or similar). Strong knowledge of coastal, surf zone, and ocean circulation dynamics. Experience with large geophysical datasets and data management techniques.
