Te Tūranga | The Role Due to the expansion of the FMA’s regulatory remit, we are looking for a Senior Adviser to join our Consumer Credit team on fixed term contract/secondment until July 2027. Working at the forefront of an evolving regulatory environment, you'll help ensure lenders put good consumer outcomes at the centre of their decision-making, contributing to fairer outcomes for Aotearoa. Working as part of a collaborative team, your mahi will include: Leading monitoring and supervisory engagements across a broad range of consumer credit providers. Assessing potential misconduct and consumer harm, recommending appropriate regulatory responses and interventions. Analysing information, industry trends and emerging risks to help shape the FMA's supervisory approach. Building constructive relationships with lenders, industry participants and other stakeholders to encourage positive conduct outcomes. Working closely with colleagues across Policy, Legal, Enforcement and Licensing to deliver coordinated regulatory responses. Providing subject matter expertise on consumer credit issues and support capability development across the wider FMA. With more than 500 lenders operating across the country, no two days are the same. You'll engage directly with regulated entities, consider complaints and market intelligence, and help identify opportunities to lift standards across the sector. As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, this is an opportunity to work on complex and meaningful issues that have a direct impact on consumers and communities throughout Aotearoa. He kōrero mōu | About you You may currently be working in a regulatory, compliance, risk, legal, audit, banking or financial services environment. Ideally, you’ll bring experience within consumer lending, retail banking, financial regulation or another field where you've assessed risk, exercised sound judgement and worked through complex issues. You'll bring: Experience analysing complex information and providing well-reasoned recommendations, advice or decisions. An understanding of consumer lending, credit, conduct risk, compliance or regulatory frameworks. Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify potential consumer harm and determine appropriate responses. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage confidently with a wide range of stakeholders. Sound judgement, resilience and the ability to navigate ambiguity in a thoughtful and pragmatic way. Strong relationship-building skills and a collaborative approach to working with others. The ability to influence outcomes and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. A genuine interest in consumer outcomes and the role regulation plays in building trust and confidence in Aotearoa’s financial sector.
