Fixed-term, Full-time 80 hours per fortnight (1 FTE) About the Role The Transition Year (TY) is the final mandatory 12-months of intensive care training undertaken by a College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) trainee, referred to as the Fellow in this unit. It is a role between that of senior registrar and consultant, with flexibility and graded responsibility to allow increasing clinical autonomy and the development of non-clinical skills such as research, quality improvement and administration. The experience gained in this role is intended to assist the Fellow's movement into specialist practice, building on skills and attributes acquired in earlier years of training, and is supported throughout by mentoring, coaching and feedback from senior medical staff. About the Team/Service/ Location The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a Level 2 ICU providing a high standard of general intensive care to both adults and children, including complex multi-system life support. The unit is capable of providing non-invasive and mechanical ventilation, extra-corporeal renal replacement therapy and invasive cardiac monitoring. Transfers to other intensive care units are considered for patients requiring specialised care and may include ventilated burns patients (Middlemore), non-ventilated burns and plastic surgery patients (Lower Hutt), Cardio-Thoracic (Wellington or Auckland), neurosurgery (Wellington), and critically ill paediatric patients (PICU, Starship in Auckland). A total of 13 beds: 46 High Dependency beds and 5-7 Intensive Care beds, including a negative pressure isolation room, with en-suite facilities and an ante-room for strict isolation precautions. The Intensive Care Service also provides a Critical Care Transport Service for the Hospital, retrievals from Wairoa Hospital and Inter-Hospital Transports and also participates in the Resuscitation and Rapid Response Service within the Hospital. About you Applicants must be registered or eligible for vocational registration, with the New Zealand Medical Council as an Intensive Care Physician or general registration with suitable qualifications. An appropriate medical degree recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand. Current registration (general or provisional vocational scope) with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Enrolled and in good standing as a trainee of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), having satisfactorily completed the required clinical training time and assessments for the core intensive care medicine, anaesthesia and medicine years.
