Job Description

The Surfacing team in Wairarapa is looking for a motivated Labourer to join the Higgins team. If you enjoy hands on work, being part of a tight knit crew, and contributing to projects that keep our roads and communities connected, this is a great opportunity to build your career in the civil construction industry. As a Labourer, you'll support the delivery of surfacing works across the Wairarapa region. Working alongside experienced operators, forepersons, and surfacing crews, you'll help deliver safe, high-quality road maintenance and construction projects. What you'll be doing Assisting with asphalt and chipseal surfacing activities Supporting crews with site preparation, set up, and pack down Carrying out general labouring duties including shovelling, sweeping, raking, lifting, and clearing work areas Assisting with pothole repairs, road maintenance, and pavement reinstatement works Supporting mobile plant operations by acting as a spotter when trained and authorised Operating small tools and equipment safely (where trained) Completing basic prestart checks on small plant and equipment Maintaining tidy, organised, and safe work environments Following Work Plans, JSEA's, and Supervisor instructions to ensure quality outcomes Assisting with traffic management activities and working safely around live traffic environments Supporting environmental controls, spill response, and site clean ups Working cooperatively with your crew and supporting other teams when required Always following Higgins' health, safety, and environmental processes and wearing required PPE What you'll bring A positive attitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn Ability to carry out physically demanding manual labour tasks Experience in surfacing, roading, civil construction, or infrastructure maintenance (desirable but not essential) Understanding of safe working practices on construction and roading sites Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team Class 1 Driver Licence (required) WTR endorsements, Class 2 Licence, or experience operating small plant (advantageous) Site Safe Passport, TTM Worker/TC Basic, or First Aid certification (desirable) A strong commitment to safety and quality Come join the Green Team Permanent, full-time role with long term work Opportunities to upskill and gain further training and qualifications Supportive team culture where everyone looks out for each other Z fuel discounts including a monthly free pie and coffee KiwiSaver employer contribution matched up to 4% Great benefits for you and your whānau About Higgins Higgins is a leading construction and infrastructure company, proudly building and maintaining roads, bridges, and civil projects that connect communities across Aotearoa.
